By then, the Gas Liquefaction Department had far surpassed the Refrigeration Machinery Department in strategic importance. Wartime expansion through gas operations, followed by postwar liquidation and setbacks. As demand for ammonia in explosives surged during wartime, synthetic plants—requiring nitrogen extraction and other technical gases—became key Linde customers. During WWII, Linde supplied industrial gases and maintenance tools for military vehicles to the armed forces; after a brief adjustment period, revenues surged rapidly, generating substantial profits. Concurrently, agricultural machinery flourished, prompting Linde to acquire Güldner in Aschaffenburg and enter the diesel engine, agricultural tractor, and electric motor sectors. However, over three-quarters of Linde’s equipment was destroyed during the war, and the company lost nearly all its overseas assets. Postwar outdated management philosophy hindered development; the company shifted toward balanced diversification. Rebuilding overseas subsidiaries took Linde over two decades, leaving it significantly behind U.S. peers and France’s Air Liquide. Moreover, many of Linde’s products no longer aligned with modern industrial development. Having lost its early technological edge, the company suffered from high warranty costs, misaligned sales policies, and generally inflated pricing—eroding its competitiveness. Consequently, Linde underwent profound internal governance reforms: Hermann Linde’s resignation in 1976 marked a turning point, after which Hans Meinhart’s managerial philosophy prevailed, transforming Linde from an engineer- and scientist-driven family enterprise into a management-led corporation.
