Another batch of victims targeting the Argentine market has emerged.

She has handled at least 15—possibly as many as 20—orders from Argentina. She said that orders from Argentina used to be genuinely excellent: customers were easy to work with, rarely haggled over prices, and demonstrated high loyalty—once they placed an order, they would continue buying from her consistently. Between 2013 and 2018, Argentine customers placed 2–3 orders annually, each worth USD 30,000–50,000. After each order, customers had to wait for approval from local government authorities for foreign exchange allocation and import permits. Therefore, when preparing the Proforma Invoice (PI), she always prepared the Packing List in advance. Typically, payment was received within one to two months. Initially, her payment terms were 30% deposit and 70% balance paid before shipment. However, after 2018—amid growing political and economic instability in Argentina—the longest wait extended to over four months. Argentina’s imports are subject to customs quota controls: importers must apply to Argentine customs or government agencies for import licenses, specifying both the value and quantity of goods. These licenses are not long-term; most are valid only for a few months or up to one year, requiring frequent reapplication. Moreover, it is no exaggeration to say that “a single 1,000-peso banknote—the highest denomination in Argentina—can only buy one kilogram of tomatoes.” This reflects a real economic phenomenon in Argentina. Both the U.S. dollar and the Chinese yuan face strict foreign exchange controls in Argentina. Payments in foreign currency must be processed through banks issuing letters of credit (LCs)—and even LC quotas undergo rigorous review. After suppliers ship goods and submit required documents to the relevant banks, payment is released to exporters only upon confirmation by the importer. The approval process is extremely protracted—often taking up to 180 days—and even then, approval is not guaranteed. Today, this once-favored market—frequently cited as a lucrative opportunity—has deteriorated into economic stagnation and hyperinflation. Though the market appears like a massive cake, there’s simply no fork to take a bite. Many of her former clients have gone bankrupt; others, facing severe payment difficulties, have been largely abandoned by Ann. Argentine payment challenges—yet solutions exist. Returning to the original question raised at the beginning of this article: Is the Argentine payment hurdle truly insurmountable? • First, Argentine orders are certainly acceptable—not off-limits. Once accepted, patience is essential. Many clients report that conditions this year are significantly better than last year, and some enterprises are now able to pay a 20% advance. • Argentina itself can no longer pay in U.S. dollars. Large corporations and affluent individuals in Argentina have already converted their holdings into dollars, as the peso’s steep depreciation has rendered it virtually worthless. • Sinosure (China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation) currently offers coverage with a 20% down payment and final payment due one month after goods arrive at port—provided the buyer has an overseas company applying for coverage, backed by an Argentine entity. Coverage applications filed solely by Argentine domestic companies are extremely difficult to approve. You may also consult China People’s Insurance Company (PICC). • A widely adopted solution among exporters is receiving payments in U.S. dollars from third countries—for example, Switzerland or Uruguay. Once the client successfully remits funds from an Argentine bank, you reimburse them by transferring the equivalent amount to their designated account. • Upon receiving an Argentine order, strive to stipulate 100% prepayment—before bulk production begins—in the PI. If the order value is modest, Argentine buyers engaging in international trade are typically sizable local players, capable of paying several tens of thousands of U.S. dollars outright. For larger orders—e.g., USD 100,000—we recommend 50% deposit and 50% balance paid before shipment. • Never commence production without confirmed payment—or accept only a minimal deposit—even if you enjoy an excellent relationship with your client. Argentine buyers sometimes cancel orders unexpectedly due to failure to secure foreign exchange approvals or other unforeseen reasons. • Never ship goods before receiving full payment. Always ensure payment is received prior to dispatch—otherwise, you’ll find yourself in a highly vulnerable position.

Mercado Libre’s profits surge 44% thanks to its turnaround in Argentina! Must-read for cross-border e-commerce sellers targeting Mexico!

In Latin America’s high-inflation, high-interest-rate environment, Mercado Libre’s first-quarter profits soared by 44%. The company just released its Q1 2025 financial results, reporting net income of USD 494 million. And the biggest driver behind this growth was—not Mexico, nor Brazil—but Argentina. | Mercado Libre’s Q1 Performance Snapshot | Why did Argentina explode under the ‘inflation + exchange rate’ model? Martín de los Santos, Mercado Libre’s Chief Financial Officer, highlighted three key factors: 1. “Base-effect” + exchange-rate adjustment benefits After the Argentine peso depreciated sharply at the end of 2023, assets and liabilities were broadly repriced—lowering the comparative base and making year-on-year growth figures appear significantly stronger. 2. “Soft landing” of inflation and interest rates Following the new administration’s inauguration, Argentina implemented contractionary policies to rein in inflation and stabilize interest rates—creating space for renewed consumer confidence and credit expansion. 3. Enhanced platform ecosystem and user experience Mercado Libre has continuously upgraded its logistics (Fulfillment), payments (Mercado Pago), and financial services (loans and credit cards), thereby strengthening user engagement and retention. Even in economically volatile countries, a deeply entrenched e-commerce ecosystem can achieve remarkable resilience—and even thrive against headwinds.
