Antoniu leaked insider information to a former college classmate, who used it to buy stocks for profit. Although Antoniu left Morgan Stanley in early 1975, he soon found a new accomplice within the firm. Between 1973 and 1978, they collectively profited $800,000. In February 1981, criminal charges were filed against them—the first time an investment bank faced criminal prosecution. ExxonMobil Considers Acquiring Oil-Exploration Specialist Denbury Inc.

U.S.-based ExxonMobil Corp. is considering acquiring Denbury Inc., a petroleum and natural gas producer that owns the largest carbon dioxide pipeline network in the United States. According to people familiar with the matter—who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter has not yet been made public—ExxonMobil has expressed preliminary interest in the company, which is headquartered in Plano, Texas. They added that no final decision has been made, and ExxonMobil may choose not to pursue the potential transaction. On Monday at 3:49 p.m., Denbury’s stock surged 12%, closing at $98.83, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $4.9 billion. A Denbury representative declined to comment, and an ExxonMobil representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Denbury operates more than 1,300 miles (2,092 kilometers) of pipelines dedicated exclusively to transporting carbon dioxide along the U.S. Gulf Coast and in the Rocky Mountains. Carbon capture forms a cornerstone of ExxonMobil’s climate strategy—which aims to eliminate operational emissions by 2050—and acquiring Denbury would provide the oil giant with critical, hard-to-replicate infrastructure essential to achieving that goal. If completed, the acquisition would also mark the largest carbon-management investment since the U.S. passed the Inflation Reduction Act in August, a law that offers substantial tax incentives for carbon dioxide capture.
