Though no formal quid pro quo exists, nor any written contract, the practical effect is identical. Most importantly, ordinary citizens perceive it identically—and this perception undermines public confidence in democracy just as severely as outright, blatant corruption.[33] In a sense, the Supreme Court’s action merely reflects, from another angle, the success of moneyed interest groups in establishing a “one-dollar-one-vote” system: they successfully elect politicians aligned with their interests, who then appoint judges empowered to grant corporations unlimited political spending rights.
