Anglo American sells its 33.3% stake in Jellinbah coal business, accelerating restructuring

Global mining giant Anglo American has taken another significant step in its strategic restructuring. It agreed on November 4 to sell its 33.3% minority stake in Jellinbah Group to Zashvin Pty Limited for AUD 1.6 billion (approximately USD 1.1 billion). Jellinbah Group currently holds a 70% interest in the Jellinbah East and Lake Vermont coking coal mines in Australia. The combined annual capacity of these mines is approximately 14 million tonnes, supplying markets in Brazil, Europe, India, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. The sale marks an important milestone in Anglo American’s ongoing divestment program. Notably, Anglo American’s 33.3% interest in Jellinbah Group contributed up to USD 779 million to the group’s revenue in 2023.

Australian-listed Aspire Mining achieves major regulatory progress on its coking coal project in Mongolia

In December 2022, Aspire Mining received milestone final written approvals for its project permitting—laying the foundation for progress in 2023. Development of the Obov Tugrug coking coal project requires extensive assessments and studies, as well as regulatory approvals to secure the necessary licenses and permits for planned mining, processing, and transportation infrastructure. The December 2022 permitting milestones included: • Approval by the Professional Committee of Mongolia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism of the Detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (DEIA) related to the proposed Obov Tugrug coking coal mine. • Approval by the Mineral Resources Committee (MRC) of Mongolia’s Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authority (MRPAM) of the feasibility study for the construction and operation of the Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP), based on the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study previously completed by Sedgman Pty Ltd. • Approval by the Scientific and Technical Committee (STC) of Mongolia’s Road and Transport Development Center (RTDC) of the feasibility study for the proposed paved road intended to support product coal transportation. Work continues on other required regulatory approvals, including engagement with local community residents and their government representatives to explain the project plans and ensure proper understanding.
