CFO of a Fortune 500 U.S. Company’s Asia-Pacific Region: Time-Honored Strategies for Century-Long Success and Building a Learning Organization

Every year, our Boston headquarters arranges short-term MBA-style training for company executives, delivered by professors from top local universities. We call this program 'Cabot College.' I had the privilege of participating over a decade ago. During the strategy course, the professor posed this question: 'There is a company with a large core business—essentially a cash cow—but very slow growth; all its other businesses are small in scale. Do you think this company is promising?' Everyone replied, based on what we’d learned, that the company had no future. The professor then said: 'That’s Cabot itself.' At the time, it seemed like a lighthearted joke—but Cabot indeed recognized a long-standing strategic weakness in its product portfolio. Since then, the company has continuously focused on its core business, listened closely to customers’ voices, and persistently developed new products and applications aligned with future customer needs. Perhaps this is why Cabot has endured so long: every strategic decision revolves around 'advancing the core business.' For example, in December 2021, Cabot divested its Purification Solutions business—a unit with solid prospects. Yet we chose to exit it to concentrate resources on core business units and invest in areas with strong growth potential and innovation capacity, such as battery materials. The rapid rise of electric vehicles has accelerated lithium-ion battery development. Conductive materials play a critical role in enhancing battery range, reducing charging time, and extending cycle life. Innovative battery materials are therefore a key focus area for us. Of course, companies at different stages have distinct developmental priorities—and thus the CFO’s value proposition varies accordingly. While a pre-IPO company may need a CFO with strong compliance expertise and broad fundraising networks, Cabot demands a CFO who deeply understands and embodies 'long-termism.' Our priority is helping the company create intrinsic value—not chasing short-term capital-market performance. Some companies go public solely to cash out; once that’s done, management walks away—such an approach can never build a century-old enterprise. In my view, a healthy attitude toward capital is this: never forget the company’s original mission. Capital markets should be leveraged to secure funding that strengthens and scales the core business—not pursued for ulterior motives. ・2. If Cabot had a personality, its most cherished value would be 'Integrity' Beyond its unwavering focus on core operations, Cabot’s core values are also vital to its enduring success. Among them, 'integrity' stands out as one of the most treasured. Our senior executives routinely apply a simple 'Headline Test' before making decisions: 'If tomorrow a newspaper published this decision on its front page, would the public approve?' If the answer is 'yes,' it’s the right thing to do; otherwise, it shouldn’t be done. Though enterprises serve multiple stakeholders—including employees, customers, investors, and regulators—I’ve never believed integrity creates conflicts among them. As long as managers act with a clear conscience, their actions will inherently align with everyone’s interests and values. At Cabot, I’ve never faced a 'difficult moment' regarding financial integrity.
