Traditionally, investing in industrials involves buying short-cycle companies—those selling low-cost, small-ticket items like nuts and bolts—at the trough of a downturn, and buying long-cycle companies—those selling large-ticket items like Caterpillar (CAT) excavators—only once recovery becomes unmistakably evident. The problem with this conventional strategy is that the pandemic accelerated both the downturn and the rebound. When timelines are so uncertain, it’s wiser to stick with high-quality stocks—as recommended by RBC Capital Markets analyst Deane Dray. These are firms with proven track records, strong market positions, and sound balance sheets. Food manufacturers, semiconductor makers, and personal protective equipment (PPE) producers are performing well now. Supply-chain disruptions caused by the pandemic are boosting demand for factory automation. Kaplowitz noted that over 90% of diversified manufacturers’ production facilities have resumed operations.
