Yet now, India’s top conglomerate—the Adani Group—is embroiled in a massive fraud scandal, severely undermining Western investors’ confidence in Indian equities—and triggering a broad-based foreign capital exodus. Even more seriously, Adani’s implosion could ignite India’s broader economic powder keg. Adani—a fellow native of Prime Minister Modi’s home state—has already pushed India’s domestic debt situation to the brink. Indian banks and insurers hold astronomical exposures to Adani. Indian banks lending to Adani—including Bank of Baroda, PSU banks, Punjab National Bank (PNB), and Canara Bank—have all plunged over 8% in share price. Estimates suggest Indian state-owned banks’ loans to Adani Group companies amount to roughly 6% of their total net assets for FY2024. Should Adani’s flagship vessel capsize, India’s entire financial sector could sink alongside it. Adani once declared India would become the world’s third-largest economy within ten years—and surpass a certain country to become the world’s second-largest by 2050. Yet his grasp of basic economics seems shaky: why insist on 'third'? Why not ask Vietnam—or 'He Qizheng'—who usually suffers most when No. 1 and No. 2 clash? A single individual dragging down both India’s stock market and banking system—Adani may well serve as the fuse that detonates India’s economic powder keg.
