What was the stated purpose of Project Freedom, and why did President Trump pause it?

Project Freedom was intended to deploy US military assets—including guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, 15,000 personnel, and various drones—to provide a 'powerful red, white, and blue dome' of security for commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, thereby countering Iran's chokehold on the waterway. Trump paused it after being warned by mediator Pakistan that the operation risked escalating conflict, especially following Iranian drone, missile, and fast-attack boat attacks against US-assisted vessels—and an Iranian strike on a UAE oil terminal—that threatened to reignite hostilities despite a nearly month-old ceasefire.

How did US officials characterize Project Freedom’s scope and posture, and what immediate operational challenges undermined its launch?

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine described Project Freedom as a 'temporary mission' and 'defensive operation' focused on establishing an 'enhanced security area on the southern side of the strait' using warplanes, helicopters, drones, and surveillance assets; Hegseth claimed 'hundreds more ships from nations around the world are lining up to transit.' However, the operation faced immediate challenges: Iranian attacks repelled during the US-assisted exit of two vessels on Monday, coupled with an Iranian strike on Fujairah’s oil terminal, heightened tensions, caused commercial traffic to dwindle dramatically, and led BIMCO’s safety chief to warn the security situation was 'on an escalatory path'—prompting Trump’s pause before full implementation.
