U.S. Government Investment: Elevating Minerals to Strategic National Priority The Trump administration has designated metal demand from defense and AI data centers as a new strategic priority—and taken a series of unusual measures, including direct equity stakes in metals companies. Beyond Thacker Pass, the government also holds a 15% stake in MP Materials, a Nevada-based rare-earth metals developer. Jon Evans, CEO of Lithium Americas, stated that this policy shift has fundamentally altered the market landscape: “From last summer to this summer, the entire situation has changed completely. Now it’s more balanced—because this isn’t just about EVs anymore; we’ve become part of energy security policy.” GM’s investment totals $625 million, securing a 38% equity stake in the mine. This capital will primarily fund equipment to process ore into lithium carbonate—the core raw material for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, widely used in data-center energy storage and grid backup systems.
