Trump’s New Headache Has Arrived

Trump has gotten the U.S. under control—but new troubles have already emerged. Though everyone around him appears fiercely loyal, showering him with praise at every turn, Trump is deeply frustrated to find that these very people are locked in fierce internal rivalries—even clashing openly during cabinet meetings. According to a report by The New York Times, on March 6, a heated confrontation erupted during a cabinet meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio—the top-ranking cabinet official—and Elon Musk—the White House’s most influential figure. The scene reportedly grew quite explosive. The Times opened its report bluntly: “Rubio was furious.” It described how, seated beside President Trump in the White House Cabinet Room, the Secretary of State sat listening as the world’s richest man launched a blistering verbal assault against him. What did Musk say? He lambasted Rubio for failing to carry out large-scale layoffs—claiming that, in the 45 days since Rubio assumed office, not a single person had been fired. “You haven’t fired anyone,” Musk sneered contemptuously, adding that perhaps the only person Rubio had ever fired was an employee from Musk’s Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), who had been assigned to the State Department. Rubio exploded with rage. U.S. media reports indicate Rubio had long harbored deep resentment toward Musk—especially after Musk abruptly shuttered the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), an agency technically under Rubio’s purview. If you recall, during Trump’s first cabinet meeting, when Musk passionately expounded his reform vision—including demanding federal employees email their supervisors weekly lists of “the five things you did last week”—Rubio rolled his eyes and flashed a wry smile toward Trump… Trump quickly patted Rubio’s arm, prompting him to straighten up and resume his formal posture. In other words, Trump was fully aware of Rubio’s strong antipathy toward Musk—but chose to look the other way. At the March 6 cabinet meeting, however, Rubio could no longer contain himself and unleashed a full-frontal attack on Musk, accusing him of lying. “What about the more than 1,500 State Department officials who retired early via buyouts? Doesn’t that count as layoffs?” he retorted sarcastically. “Does Musk want me to rehire them just so he can fire them again—in front of everyone?” Musk remained unmoved and shot back: “You’re great on TV.” What did he mean? The implication was crystal clear: Rubio excels at performing for cameras and delivering lofty rhetoric—but falls short when it comes to actual execution. How did Trump react? According to U.S. media accounts, throughout the entire exchange, President Trump leaned back in his chair, arms crossed—“as if watching a tennis match.” He appeared to relish watching his two top aides battle it out. But after the argument dragged on awkwardly and interminably, Trump finally stepped in. Reportedly, his intervention was telling: he praised Rubio, calling his work “excellent.” In Trump’s view, serving as Secretary of State is no small feat—Rubio is constantly traveling abroad, appearing on television, and managing a vast diplomatic apparatus; thus, mutual cooperation among cabinet members is essential. What about Musk? Trump affirmed he still supports Musk’s mission—but added that going forward, implementation must be handled by department heads, while Musk’s team should limit itself to offering recommendations. Observers noted that, shortly after this cabinet meeting, Trump posted on social media praising DOGE’s “incredible” success over the past six weeks. He announced that, now that the cabinet is fully staffed, he has directed all department heads to collaborate with DOGE to cut costs and reduce personnel.

The U.S. and India Suddenly Reconcile—One Detail Is Highly Unusual

2. Russian oil suits Indian refineries well; switching to alternatives would raise costs. 3. Russia and India share a longstanding friendship—India cannot stab Russia in the back. 4. If the U.S. says ‘don’t buy,’ does India simply comply? India, too, possesses national dignity. Is it truly impossible? Don’t forget—there’s no shortage of face-slapping moments in global politics. On the chessboard of international relations, there are no eternal promises—only perpetual calculations of interest. Finally, what’s the bottom line? Here are three preliminary observations: First, indeed, Trump’s “winning philosophy” has met its match in Modi’s “winning philosophy.” Read Trump’s tweets: unquestionably, the U.S. has won. Look—U.S. tariffs stand at 18%, while India’s will ultimately drop to zero; India has pledged to purchase over $500 billion worth of American goods; and India will stop buying cheaper Russian oil, opting instead for more expensive U.S. oil. Yet read Modi’s tweets: clearly, India has won. Look—we didn’t say a word, yet the U.S. voluntarily lowered its tariffs; the world’s two largest democracies are poised to deepen cooperation; and with Modi and Trump at the helm, bilateral ties will reach unprecedented heights. So—who really won? It must be said that, in contemporary international power games, “victory” is often first and foremost a propaganda product—and only secondarily, perhaps, a factual reality. I’ve seen Indian netizens complain: “The Modi government has abandoned Russian oil, hurting agricultural interests, and committed to purchasing $500 billion in U.S. goods—yet India still faces 18% tariffs. Tell me: who’s the winner, and who’s the loser?” Second, clearly, this is an extremely delicate game of maneuvering. Observers note that just days earlier, EU leaders visited India and concluded a historic free-trade agreement. Under the deal, tariffs on roughly 90% of goods traded between the EU and India were eliminated; EU exports to India are projected to double by 2032; auto tariffs dropped from 110% to 10%; wine tariffs fell from 150% to 20–30%… With the U.S. wielding its big stick, Modi turned and embraced Europe. When the east door closes, the west one opens. In a multipolar world, survival wisdom lies in carving out maximum options amid contradictions. I’ve seen U.S. economists analyze: “Trump may be rushing to strike a deal with India,” because quite simply, “if India grants the EU preferential market access, U.S. firms will suffer—a domino effect will follow.” After all, India is an emerging, massive market—and American companies are anxious, too. Of course, India values the U.S. far more than Europe; the EU deal is merely a bargaining chip. A modest concession on Russia buys Washington’s renewed goodwill—why wouldn’t India seize that opportunity? How will Russia respond? I don’t know—but I did notice, perhaps coincidentally, that on the very same day the U.S.-India relationship broke through, Putin dispatched Defense Minister Shoigu to China for “in-depth strategic consultations on various international and regional issues of mutual concern.” Third and finally—who will get slapped in the face next? Will India slap Russia in the face? Will India slap the U.S. in the face? Or will the U.S. slap India in the face? One thing is certain: one of these outcomes is bound to happen. Now, the core question remains: Will India actually halt its purchases of Russian oil? Trump proclaims it loudly everywhere; Modi refuses to confirm—leaving the entire world guessing: Did Trump truly win Modi over—or did Modi successfully pull the wool over Trump’s eyes?
