Investment Landscape Review: The Phosphorus Chemical Industry

Phosphorus chemical industry: refers to the chemical industry associated with the element phosphorus. Phosphorus chemical production primarily involves the mining of phosphate rock, processing of phosphate ore, and manufacturing and application of phosphorus compounds. This corresponds to the upstream and downstream segments of the phosphorus chemical industry value chain. Phosphate Rock Phosphate rock is mainly used in the production of phosphate fertilizers, yellow phosphorus, and phosphates. Globally, proven basic reserves of phosphate rock total approximately 6.7 billion metric tons, over 80% of which are concentrated in Morocco and other North African countries. China ranks second globally—and first in Asia—in phosphate rock resources, with proven economically viable reserves totaling about 3.24 billion metric tons. However, China’s high-grade phosphate rock resources are scarce, while medium- and low-grade resources predominate. Yunnan, Hubei, Guizhou, Hunan, and Sichuan provinces collectively account for roughly 81% of China’s total phosphate rock reserves. The primary component of phosphate rock is 【phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅)】; the higher its content, the higher the grade of the ore. Phosphate rock is mined from three main types of deposits: 1. Exogenic sedimentary phosphorite deposits; 2. Endogenic apatite deposits; 3. Metamorphic apatite rock deposits. OCP (Office Chérifien des Phosphates), Morocco’s state-owned phosphate company, is the world’s largest phosphate producer and exporter, holding the largest global phosphate reserves. Phosphoric Acid Key intermediate products in the midstream segment—derived from phosphate rock—include phosphoric acid and yellow phosphorus. Phosphoric acid lies at the core of the phosphorus chemical industry, with fertilizer production representing its largest downstream demand. Approximately 71% of phosphate rock is used to produce phosphoric acid, and 90% of that phosphoric acid is subsequently used to manufacture phosphate fertilizers. Phosphoric acid serves as a raw material for producing monoammonium phosphate (MAP), diammonium phosphate (DAP), electronic-grade phosphoric acid, industrial-grade phosphoric acid, food-grade phosphoric acid, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP). Notably, MAP can be categorized into 【industrial-grade】 and 【agricultural-grade】 based on its production method. Industrial-grade MAP is used to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP), a key cathode material for new-energy batteries. Additionally, lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆)—produced from yellow phosphorus—is another critical electrolyte material for new-energy batteries. Phosphoric acid boasts the broadest range of applications across the industry. Production of Phosphoric Acid There are two principal methods for producing phosphoric acid: 1. Thermal Process Involves burning 【yellow phosphorus】 and hydrating the resulting phosphorus pentoxide to yield 【phosphoric acid】. Used to manufacture 【industrial-grade monoammonium phosphate】 and other industrial phosphates, as well as novel fertilizers. Phosphorus trichloride (PCl₃), derived from yellow phosphorus, is employed in producing glyphosate, phosphorus-based flame retardants, and 【lithium hexafluorophosphate】. 2. Wet Process Involves decomposing 【phosphate rock】 with sulfuric acid (or alternatively hydrochloric acid) to produce 【phosphoric acid】. Primarily used for manufacturing 【phosphate fertilizers】, industrial phosphates, feed-grade ammonium hydrogen phosphate, and sodium tripolyphosphate. Three main process variants exist: 【sulfuric acid process】, 【hydrochloric acid process】, and 【nitric acid process】. H Comparison between Thermal and Wet Processes: The phosphoric acid produced via the thermal process can be directly used as industrial-grade phosphoric acid. The wet process consumes ~20% less energy than the thermal process, with production costs amounting to only 70–80% of those for thermal-process acid. Producing one ton of yellow phosphorus consumes approximately 14,000 kWh of electricity. The wet process is more energy-efficient; purity of wet-process acid can be enhanced through 【wet-process purification】. The wet process represents the future development trend. Fertilizers Fertilizers include nitrogenous fertilizers, phosphatic fertilizers, potassic fertilizers, micronutrient fertilizers, and compound fertilizers. Primary raw materials for fertilizer production include natural gas, coal, phosphate rock, sulfur resources, and potassium resources. These raw materials constitute the key data points for tracking the phosphorus chemical industry. Price increases in upstream raw materials inevitably drive up costs downstream. Behind 3 Billion Tons of Phosphate Rock: Chinese Chemical Enterprises Are Building Their Next Industrial Chain in Egypt

In 2025, Chuankunuo announced plans to invest RMB 1.934 billion in constructing a phosphorus chemical project in Suez, Egypt. The project includes: ・An 800,000-ton-per-year sulfuric acid plant using sulfur; ・A 300,000-ton-per-year industrial wet-process crude phosphoric acid plant; ・A 150,000-ton-per-year plant producing 52% phosphoric acid; ・A 300,000-ton-per-year monoammonium phosphate (MAP) plant; ・A 20,000-ton-per-year sodium fluorosilicate plant. According to the company’s disclosure, the project is expected to take approximately three years to complete, and upon full operation, it is projected to generate annual revenue exceeding RMB 2 billion and net profit exceeding RMB 300 million. Why did Chuankunuo choose to locate its capacity in Egypt? The core reason is industrial chain efficiency. Past model: Import phosphate rock overseas → Produce domestically → Export finished products. Current model: Secure resources overseas → Process locally → Serve global markets. This shift signifies a fundamental change in corporate competitive logic. Overseas factory construction is not merely about scaling up—it entails establishing new production nodes near both resource sources and end markets. For chemical enterprises with high export dependence, such a strategy optimizes cost structures and enhances international market competitiveness. 04 From Chuankunuo to Wanhua: Chinese Chemical Enterprises Are Transforming Their Overseas Expansion Approach Chuankunuo’s strategic move reflects not just a single corporate decision, but an overarching trend of Chinese chemical enterprises expanding overseas. Historically, Chinese manufacturing enterprises expanded abroad primarily by: • Exporting products; • Seeking overseas customers. Yet, amid intensifying global competition, an increasing number of enterprises are shifting toward: • Establishing overseas manufacturing facilities; • Globally optimizing supply chains; • Implementing localized production. Represented by large-scale chemical enterprises such as Wanhua Chemical, Chinese chemical firms have been steadily advancing their globalization strategies in recent years—building overseas production bases, R&D systems, and supply chain networks—to strengthen international market competitiveness. The underlying logic behind this transformation is clear: In the past, Chinese enterprises competed globally mainly on cost advantages. Moving forward, competitiveness will hinge on: • Resource deployment capability; • Technology transfer capability; • Global operational capability. From selling products to building integrated industrial chains, Chinese chemical enterprises are entering a new stage of internationalization. 05 Behind a Single Phosphorus Chemical Project Lies the Entire Industrial Chain Going Global Together Large-scale phosphorus chemical projects cannot be executed by a single enterprise alone. They require collaboration among: investment enterprises, engineering contractors, equipment suppliers, and technical service providers. The Abu Tartour Phosphoric Acid Plant project in Egypt exemplifies a typical case of coordinated Chinese enterprise expansion overseas. In 2019, China Construction Engineering Group and Wengfu Group formed a joint venture and signed an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract with Egypt’s Phosphate and Fertilizer Company for the phosphoric acid plant project, valued at approximately USD 848 million. The project is designed to produce 500,000 tons of phosphoric acid annually, supported by a 1.6-million-ton-per-year sulfuric acid plant and related infrastructure. The significance of this project extends far beyond constructing a single factory. More importantly, it embodies an emerging model of overseas cooperation: • Resource-oriented enterprises lead industrial investment; • Engineering firms manage project execution; • Equipment suppliers deliver industrial support. Ultimately, this forms a “coordinated overseas expansion by Chinese enterprises.” 06 Egypt Offers Opportunities—and Challenges—in the Market Although Egypt possesses notable resource and geographic advantages, overseas investment is no simple endeavor. First, there is the issue of investment cycle duration. Phosphorus chemical production is a quintessential capital-intensive industry. From resource development and plant construction to market entry and sales, long-term commitment is required. Second, local operational challenges persist.
