Structural opportunities in the shipping sector are emerging.

I. Tanker Shipping: The Most Direct and Core Theme, with Maximum Earnings Leverage Tankers represent the most clearly beneficial and highest-leverage subsector in this round of geopolitical conflict. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has virtually ceased, and international insurers have withdrawn from underwriting war-risk coverage—effectively halting shipping activity. To mitigate risk, major Asian crude oil importers have been forced to shift procurement to Atlantic-region suppliers such as the U.S., West Africa, and Brazil, significantly lengthening transport distances and directly boosting demand for ‘ton-nautical miles.’ Simultaneously, vessels rerouting via the Cape of Good Hope experience reduced per-vessel operational efficiency, leading to a passive contraction in global effective fleet capacity. Under this confluence of factors, VLCC freight rates have surged from lows to tens of thousands of U.S. dollars per day; war-risk premiums further elevate the rate floor. Even if tensions ease later, global crude oil restocking demand is expected to sustain a second wave of upward freight-rate momentum. Key investment candidates include China Merchants Energy Shipping (dominant domestic VLCC fleet scale—significant earnings leverage per $10,000/day rate increase), COSCO Shipping Energy (tanker industry leader with integrated LNG transportation capabilities), and Hanjin Shipping (global VLCC operation leader with strong pricing power). II. LNG Shipping: A High-Leverage Subsector Underpinned by Energy Demand Inelasticity As a critical LNG transit corridor, disruption at the Strait of Hormuz directly impedes exports from Qatar and other producers, disturbing roughly 20% of global LNG supply and pushing up natural gas prices in Europe and elsewhere. Natural gas demand remains highly inelastic, with limited alternative supply routes—keeping the LNG shipping supply-demand balance persistently tight. Both COSCO Shipping Energy and China Merchants Energy Shipping operate large-scale LNG fleets. Long-term contracts lock in stable revenues, while exposure to spot-market rate increases delivers upside leverage—making them high-quality beneficiaries across both oil and gas transportation segments.

The anti-fragility of shipping industry leaders: COSCO Shipping Holdings’ secret to navigating cyclical volatility at a 5x P/E ratio.

• Inventory Critical Threshold: Contract liabilities stood at RMB 7.02 billion in Q1 2025 (up RMB 1.2 billion year-on-year); a 20% decline in sales volume could push inventory turnover days beyond 80 days. 2. Sustainability of Competitive Advantages • Cost Moat: Per-TEU cost is 11% below the industry average; methanol-fuel retrofitting further reduces fuel costs by 18%; • Resource Barrier: Controls key global hubs including Greece’s Piraeus Port—the world’s top-five container ports—and has ranked #1 globally in throughput for five consecutive years. 3. Strategic Execution Risks • Imbalanced Debt Structure: Current ratio = 1.71; quick ratio = 1.66; a 1% rise in interest rates would increase annual financial expenses by RMB 470 million; • Green Transition Costs: Methanol-powered vessel retrofitting costs USD 30 million per ship; a carbon tax of USD 50/ton would add RMB 1.8 billion annually. IV. Investment Value Assessment: DCF Valuation and Margin-of-Safety Calculation 1. DCF Model Estimating Intrinsic Value • Free Cash Flow Forecast: – High-Growth Phase (2025–2030): Revenue growth assumed at 5% (vs. industry average of 3%); EBIT margin at 25% (2024: 27.9%); – Perpetual Growth Phase (post-2031): Growth rate of 2.5%; capex at 5% of revenue. • Discount Rate (WACC): – Cost of Equity (CAPM): Risk-free rate = 3.5%, β = 1.2, market risk premium = 7% → Rₑ = 3.5% + 1.2 × 7% = 11.9%; – Cost of Debt = 4.5%; capital structure weights (E/V = 60%, D/V = 40%) → WACC = 11.9% × 60% + 4.5% × 40% × (1 − 25%) = 8.7%. • Terminal Value Calculation: TV = [FCF₂₀₃₀ × (1 + 2.5%)] / (8.7% − 2.5%) = RMB 198 billion; • Present Value Summation: PV of forecast-period FCFs + PV of terminal value = RMB 28–32 per share (current share price: RMB 14.36, positioned at valuation midpoint). 2. Scenario-Based Valuation Analysis • Bull Case: Red Sea crisis persists + breakthroughs in emerging markets → P/E = 10× (implying market cap of RMB 300 billion), contingent upon: – Overseas revenue share rising to 30%; – Green electricity premium mechanism implementation. • Base Case: Weak supply-demand equilibrium → P/E = 8× (dividend yield = 7.1%), assuming: – Debt-to-asset ratio stabilized below 40%; – Freight-rate volatility ≤ 15%. • Bear Case: Intensified price war → P/E = 5× (implying market cap of RMB 180 billion), triggered by: – Excess new-ship deliveries; – Global economic recession. V. Key Monitoring Indicators and Data Validation 1. Leading Indicators: • SCFI Europe Line Weekly Average Rate (threshold: 2,000 points); • Delivery progress of methanol-powered vessels (target: 12 ships in 2025). 2. Risk Thresholds: • Debt-to-asset ratio exceeding 45%; • Accounts receivable turnover days exceeding 30 days.

COSCO Shipping: Energy Transport Logic Undergoes Major Shift, How to Find Certainty?
