According to insights from Unemployment Jun, PPG Industries has finalized a definitive agreement with American Industrial Partners (AIP) to sell its architectural coatings businesses in the United States and Canada to AIP for $550 million. The transaction is expected to close by late 2024 or early 2025. Facilities included in this sale comprise seven manufacturing plants in the U.S. and two in Canada; twelve distribution centers; and over 15,000 distribution points—including 750 company-owned stores and 6,600 independent distributors. As of year-end last year, PPG employed approximately 53,000 people globally; thus, the workforce reduction represents roughly 3% of its total headcount. PPG forecasts that once these cost-reduction initiatives are fully implemented, they will generate approximately $175 million in annual pre-tax cost savings—$60 million of which will be realized in 2025. Additionally, the company plans to record a $250 million pre-tax charge in Q4 2024. Tim Knavish, PPG’s CEO, stated that although the decision to cut jobs was difficult, divesting its architectural coatings businesses in the U.S. and Canada—as well as its silica products business—will enhance organic growth and financial returns, thereby further optimizing its portfolio. Knavish emphasized that this layoff decision will neither undermine PPG’s current investment plans nor alter its commitment to organic growth. Recently, PPG released its Q3 2024 financial results, demonstrating stable profitability. Despite revenue pressure, PPG successfully increased net income—largely attributable to its diversified business mix and highly effective cost-control strategies. Per the report, PPG recorded $4.575 billion (approx. RMB 32.581 billion) in revenue for Q3 2024—a 1.48% decline year-on-year. Though revenue dipped slightly, net income rose 9.86% year-on-year to $468 million (approx. RMB 3.332 billion). For the first three quarters combined, PPG achieved $13.68 billion (approx. RMB 97.4 billion) in revenue—a 1.56% decline year-on-year—while net income reached $1.396 billion (approx. RMB 9.941 billion), up a robust 18.31% year-on-year. Commenting on the results, Tim Knavish said: “Although automotive OEM construction activity slowed this quarter, we achieved positive growth across seven of our ten businesses—and particularly strong growth in several key technology-driven businesses—delivering a record Q3 earnings per share.” In the Asia-Pacific region, PPG posted solid sales growth in both its China and India reporting segments, driven by expanded market share. PPG also disclosed that the U.S. and Canadian architectural coatings businesses being sold generated approximately $2 billion (approx. RMB 14.2 billion) in sales in 2023—roughly one-tenth of PPG’s total annual revenue.

PPG’s full-year revenue held steady at $15.9 billion in 2023, while net profit surged 17% to $1.6 billion.

Aerospace Coatings: Aerospace coatings set a new record in Q4 2025, with organic sales growing in the double-digit percentage range year-on-year, driven by higher selling prices and increased volumes. Demand remains robust, with customer order backlog standing at approximately $315 million—even as production and other operational efficiencies improve. Global international and domestic air travel improved year-on-year, and passenger air traffic is projected to grow 5% in 2026. With rising demand for PPG’s technologically advanced, high-performance products, the company remains committed to resolving bottlenecks and expanding production capacity to further boost output and profitability. Automotive Refinish: Organic sales for automotive refinish coatings declined by a high single-digit percentage in Q4 2025 versus the prior year. This result was primarily driven by lower organic sales in the U.S., where demand was dampened by reduced collision claims and by dealers managing their ordering patterns for PPG products during the first half of 2025. Collision claims in the U.S. declined by a high single-digit percentage in Q4—improving from the double-digit percentage decline seen in the first half. During Q4, the company increased the number of PPGLINQ™ subscriptions and PPGMoonwalk™ installations, bringing the total to over 3,200—further supporting customer productivity and related market share gains. Protective & Marine Coatings: Organic sales for protective and marine coatings grew by a double-digit percentage versus Q4 2024, driven by substantial volume increases across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Q4 marked the 11th consecutive quarter of year-on-year volume growth. This volume growth reflects increased market share for both protective and marine products—evidence of strong demand for PPG’s sustainably advantaged offerings. Transportation Solutions: Organic sales for the Transportation Solutions business declined only slightly—by a low single-digit percentage—in Q4 2025 versus Q4 2024. Seasonally, this business typically records lower sales in Q1 and Q4—approximately half the level of Q2 and Q3—due to difficulties applying traffic markings under colder temperatures. Looking ahead, PPG expects the aerospace coatings market to remain strong. Protective and marine coatings are expected to sustain last year’s robust growth momentum, bringing growth rates closer to industry averages. In automotive refinish coatings, organic sales are expected to decline due to customer ordering patterns and broader industry demand trends—but partially offset by price increases. Transportation Solutions is expected to follow its typical seasonal pattern. PPG anticipates low single-digit percentage declines—or flat performance—in both operating profit and organic sales for this segment compared to Q1 2025. PPG states that its core competitive advantages will support long-term growth in the aerospace industry. The aerospace business serves as a key growth engine for the company, fueled by industry expansion and strong demand for PPG’s highly specialized, high-quality products. This business serves both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and aftermarket customers, contributes positively to the overall profitability of its reporting segment, and holds significant influence across commercial, military, and general aviation markets.
