Crypto’s New Gold Rush: Coinbase Co-Founder’s Venezuelan Oil Field Adventure

Where should one invest next after making substantial money in the crypto industry? Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of Coinbase, recently offered an unexpected answer: oil fields. This 38-year-old crypto billionaire has been frequently spotted in Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, over the past few months—and even stayed for extended periods at local hotels. After months of intensive efforts, Ehrsam finally reaped his first tangible result in early September: Primavera Infinita, a company he co-founded, officially signed a Production Sharing Contract with Venezuela’s state-owned oil company PDVSA, securing development rights to the Budare-Elotes oil field. PDVSA’s long-term target is for this block to contribute over 70,000 barrels per day in new output. This investment seems oddly disconnected from Ehrsam’s professional background. He previously worked as a foreign exchange trader at Goldman Sachs; co-founded Coinbase with Brian Armstrong in 2012; co-launched the crypto-focused investment firm Paradigm in 2018; and later expanded his portfolio to include frontier-tech companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX. So why would someone who accumulated wealth through digital assets—and whose investment focus has long centered on software and cutting-edge technologies—venture into politically volatile Venezuela to compete for a traditional resource humanity has extracted for over a century? Perhaps the answer lies not solely in oil itself. While established oil majors hesitated, Ehrsam rushed in. From a purely resource-endowment perspective, Venezuela is impossible to ignore. Yet over the past two decades, its vast underground reserves have failed to translate into commensurate production levels. At the end of the 1990s, Venezuela’s crude oil output peaked at roughly 3 million barrels per day; today, it stands at only 1.25 million barrels per day. Years of international sanctions, chronic underinvestment, aging infrastructure, and compounded political and property-rights risks have gradually turned this country—home to one of the world’s largest proven oil reserves—into an anomaly within the global oil industry. There is no shortage of oil underground; what is truly scarce are sustained capital inflows, well-maintained infrastructure, and skilled technical personnel and operational capacity—much of which has already fled the country. However, starting in 2026, the situation began shifting. After Nicolás Maduro’s arrest by U.S. authorities and Delcy Rodríguez’s appointment as interim president, U.S.–Venezuelan relations rapidly reconfigured. In the oil sector specifically, Venezuela revised its petroleum laws to allow greater private-sector participation via new production-sharing models; meanwhile, the Trump administration placed oil at the core of its Venezuela strategy—simultaneously adjusting sanctions and contractual frameworks while urging U.S. energy firms to invest approximately $100 billion locally. As a result, Venezuela’s oil industry has become a market undergoing institutional repricing. A country long shunned by global capital due to years of sanctions and economic crisis may now offer returns far exceeding those of mature markets—once it reopens. Ehrsam’s subsequent choices clearly indicate his willingness to shoulder the risks associated with this potential upside.

Understanding the Architecture of Crypto Financial On-Ramps Through Venezuela’s ‘Parallel Economy’

Imagine a country where over 30% of commerce, services, and businesses have fully adopted cryptocurrencies. From street vendors selling food and neighborhood grocery stores handling daily purchases, to salary disbursements and service fee settlements—cryptocurrencies have permeated every facet of societal operation. The root cause of this massive financial migration is the complete collapse of Venezuela’s fiat currency system. Excessive government printing, plummeting oil prices, international sanctions, and systemic corruption pushed inflation into an uncontrollable spiral. Although authorities repeatedly attempted to stabilize the situation—for instance, by removing zeros from banknotes—the bolívar’s depreciation rate had long outpaced the speed of the printing press. Ultimately, reality became almost absurd: people held bills denominated in the millions yet could not afford a roll of toilet paper or half a carton of eggs. The bolívar had utterly lost its monetary function—even being folded into wallets, handbags, or woven into crafts sold on street corners. For millions of Venezuelans, holding bolívares meant watching their savings evaporate before their eyes. Amid the ruins of traditional finance, the entire nation was forced to seek new modes of survival. Today, across Venezuela’s streets and neighborhoods, a parallel economy—built on cryptocurrencies and designed to resist inflation—has quietly taken shape. It has become routine for ordinary citizens to convert bolívar income into USDT or other cryptocurrencies immediately upon receipt, to avoid further devaluation. Millions of Venezuelans have emigrated overseas, and crypto-based remittances have increasingly become a lifeline for families remaining behind. Statistics show that of Venezuela’s roughly $5.4 billion in annual remittances, about 9% flow through cryptocurrency channels. Moreover, USDT is used not only for savings and remittances but also for everyday commercial transactions—currently accounting for roughly 10% of food-and-grocery payments. Meanwhile, as U.S. sanctions restrict dollar circulation and the government cracks down on black-market dollar trading, Venezuela has gradually permitted private-sector use of USDT for currency exchange since 2024—to keep the economy functioning. In essence, crypto assets have become both a shield protecting labor earnings from erosion and a basic necessity sustaining daily subsistence. Cryptocurrency adoption extends beyond informal street economies and impacts Venezuela’s economic lifelines. An increasing number of local enterprises, banks, and even oil-related institutions are shifting toward stablecoin-based settlements. It is an open secret that around 80% of Venezuela’s oil revenue is now settled in USDT to circumvent U.S. financial sanctions. Venezuela also launched a state-backed cryptocurrency, the Petro—but ultimately discontinued it. Furthermore, widespread speculation suggests Venezuela has built a multi-billion-dollar ‘crypto shadow settlement system,’ though concrete evidence remains elusive; nevertheless, this system is indeed helping sustain the nation’s economic operations. Venezuela’s case reveals how cryptocurrencies are emerging as reliable alternatives when traditional financial systems fail. As global geopolitical risks continue escalating—and traditional financial infrastructure grows increasingly weaponized—marginalized nations, enterprises, and individuals face ever-greater urgency in adopting censorship-resistant, borderless financial tools. The ‘re-instrumentalization’ of crypto assets: Geopolitical crises driving narrative shifts Historically, mainstream narratives around cryptocurrencies have revolved around get-rich-quick myths and techno-utopian ideals.
