Under the guidance of the 'carbon peak and carbon neutrality' goals, hydrogen energy—recognized as a clean energy source with advantages such as high efficiency and sustainability—is gradually emerging as one of the key drivers for global energy transformation. It plays a vital role in achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality, deepening reforms in energy production and consumption, and building a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system. The hydrogen energy industry chain comprises four main segments: hydrogen production, storage and transportation, refueling (hydrogen dispensing), and downstream applications. Critical hydrogen energy materials—including hydrogen storage materials and fuel cell materials—significantly influence the pace of China’s hydrogen energy industry development and represent key technological bottlenecks requiring urgent breakthroughs. Hydrogen Fuel Cell Materials: High cost and limited service life remain major barriers hindering widespread adoption of hydrogen energy. Consequently, research focuses intensively on low-platinum, ultra-low-platinum, or platinum-free catalysts. Regarding proton exchange membranes (PEMs), efforts aim to enhance fuel cell performance through membrane thinning. Additionally, interfacial structural optimization across membrane layers is essential to mitigate catalyst agglomeration and loss, and to reduce the adverse impact of harsh operating conditions on fuel cell durability. Ultra-thin PEMs lower proton transport resistance and improve self-humidification capability—delivering significant performance gains—and thus represent a clear industry trend. Guided by supportive policies, hydrogen energy industrial parks in China are developing rapidly. Regions across the country are implementing localized strategies, fostering dedicated hydrogen materials initiatives and gradually forming four major industrial clusters: the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, the Bohai Rim, and the Sichuan-Chongqing-Hubei region.
