Examining China’s innovative drug globalization model through AstraZeneca’s investment in Summit

More than three years ago, Canbridge licensed the rights to I沃西单抗 (Ivonescimab) in Europe, the U.S., and other regions to Summit for an upfront payment of $500 million. On September 28, 2026, AstraZeneca announced a strategic equity investment of $2 billion in Summit. AstraZeneca will lead clinical development of the globally first-in-class tumor immunotherapy 2.0 cornerstone drug Ivonescimab—developed by Canbridge—in combination with AstraZeneca’s Claudin 18.2 ADC, Sonesitatug Vedotin (Sone-Ve), for multiple gastrointestinal cancers. The two parties also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further explore clinical combinations of Ivonescimab with AstraZeneca’s broader portfolio of ADCs and other anti-tumor agents. Canbridge is both the original innovator of this drug and a shareholder of Summit. [1–2, 6, 10–11] A Chinese company develops a drug; an overseas company takes over its development; then a multinational pharmaceutical company joins the effort. This transaction illustrates a globalization pathway distinct from direct licensing to a large pharma: the originator leverages overseas teams and capital to advance the drug while retaining equity participation in the partner’s growth. Such arrangements characterize both Canbridge–Summit and Connaught–Ouro collaborations; however, the mode of multinational pharma involvement—and the rights retained by the Chinese innovator—differ across cases. 01 COLLABORATION AstraZeneca seeks combination partners for its ADCs AstraZeneca plans to subscribe to newly issued convertible preferred shares of Summit, acquiring equity equivalent to approximately 12% of Summit’s post-transaction outstanding common stock—or ~10.6% on a fully diluted basis. The investment agreement has been signed, though closing remains pending. Accompanying the announcement are two clinical collaboration arrangements. [1–2] One already signed agreement will jointly evaluate Ivonescimab combined with AstraZeneca’s Claudin 18.2 ADC Sone-Ve in gastrointestinal cancers. Both parties will supply their respective drugs and share trial costs, while each retains independent development and commercialization rights. The second arrangement is a broader collaboration intent—to combine Ivonescimab with additional AstraZeneca ADCs and other anticancer agents—currently formalized only as an MoU. [1–2] What attracted AstraZeneca is Ivonescimab’s synergy with its oncology pipeline. Ivonescimab simultaneously targets PD-1 and VEGF, integrating immune checkpoint inhibition with anti-angiogenesis; ADCs deliver cytotoxic payloads directly to tumor cells. As stated by AstraZeneca’s Head of Oncology R&D in the press release, combining ADCs with next-generation immunotherapies is a core strategy to expand ADC applications. [1] Interestingly, Sone-Ve also originated from Chinese R&D. Its original name was CMG901, developed by Connaught and Lepu Biopharma through their joint venture KYM. In 2023, AstraZeneca secured exclusive global rights to CMG901, agreeing to a $63 million upfront payment, development and sales milestones, and royalties on future sales. By July 2026, AstraZeneca had announced that its global Phase III gastric cancer trial for this drug met its primary overall survival endpoint; detailed results were pending disclosure at a major conference. [3–4] Thus, the same proposed combination study bridges two distinct globalization models: CMG901 entered AstraZeneca’s internal development system, whereas Ivonescimab’s key overseas rights reside with Summit.

What is AstraZeneca’s current development status?

It’s clear that AstraZeneca is charting a new course this year. Beyond changes in venue, the most striking feature of this year’s annual meeting was its theme—“Marching Toward 2030”—and the bold unveiling of an $80 billion global revenue target for 2030. That figure likely stunned many industry insiders: the ambition is truly enormous. Let the numbers speak for themselves—and you’ll see just how challenging this goal is. In 2024, AstraZeneca’s global revenue stood at $54 billion. To reach $80 billion within six years means nearly a 50% increase in revenue. For a company of this scale, every single percentage point of growth is hard-won—let alone an almost 50% surge. The difficulty is self-evident. Looking at the 2024 global pharmaceutical revenue rankings: Roche ($64.4B), Merck & Co. ($64.1B), and Pfizer ($63.6B) firmly hold the top three spots. As a side note, Johnson & Johnson’s total revenue reached $88.8 billion—but its pharmaceutical business accounted for only $57 billion. This comparison makes it immediately clear: if AstraZeneca hits its $80 billion target in 2030 while other industry giants hold steady, AstraZeneca would claim the top spot among global pharmaceutical companies. At this point, we must recall a fascinating episode—an iconic ‘underdog triumph’ in pharma history. In 2014, Pfizer launched multiple acquisition bids for AstraZeneca, culminating in a final offer valued at $117 billion—only to be flatly rejected by AstraZeneca’s board. In May of that year, Pfizer withdrew its proposal, ending the deal entirely. In hindsight, that bid may seem astonishing—but reviewing the revenue figures from the time explains Pfizer’s confidence: In 2013 (the year before the bid): Pfizer’s revenue was $51.6 billion, while AstraZeneca’s stood at just $25.712 billion—less than half of Pfizer’s.
