CNPC E-Light: Delivering Soft Power and Hard Technology to the World

The July breeze sweeps all the way from Beijing to the Hexi Corridor. Within the same week, CNPC’s ‘E-Light’ logo illuminated two locations a thousand kilometers apart: one in Beijing, where a cultural exchange delegation from the five Central Asian countries sat down with CNPC representatives for candid dialogue; the other at Yumen Oilfield’s national-level senior-skills training base, where 56 young people from Chad donned work uniforms and picked up tools to compete in a skills contest. At first glance, these appear to be two separate events—but at their core, they represent one unified effort: CNPC is using ‘E-Light’, its international communication brand, to present both China’s energy sector ‘soft power’ and ‘hard technology’ to the world. 01｜E-Light Is More Than a Name—it’s an Emerging Brand Matrix Many people hearing ‘E-Light’ for the first time instinctively translate it as ‘Light of Energy’. That’s accurate—but it’s far more than just a symbolic phrase. E-Light is CNPC’s distinctive, proprietary international communication brand, with global activities already taking root in 10 countries across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. In mid-July, members of the E-Light Cultural Exchange Delegation from five countries—including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan—gathered in Beijing with over 40 representatives from CNPC-affiliated enterprises for the ‘E-Light Silk Road Elegant Gathering’, hosted by CNPC’s Corporate Culture Department and organized by the Economics & Technology Research Institute. Just one month earlier, under the same E-Light banner, the ‘Silk Road New Generation Energy Youth Festival’ had been held in Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital, drawing nearly 200 Chinese and foreign guests to discuss energy and civilization. From elegant cultural gatherings to youth festivals, E-Light is weaving a transnational network linking ‘energy + culture + youth’. 02｜56 Young People from Chad, 13 Trades: The ‘Yumen Experience’ Behind a Skills Competition Shift the lens to Yumen. On July 20, the E-Light ‘Talent Forging’ CNPC Africa Youth Petroleum Skills Competition—hosted by CNPC’s Chad Company and organized by Yumen Oilfield—officially commenced. Three numbers stand out about this competition: 56 young professionals from Chad’s N’Djamena Refinery Company participated; 13 core petroleum refining and processing trades were included in the contest; and the event serves as preparation for the company’s second overseas skills training program scheduled for 2026.
