1. Reliance Industries has ceased domestic sales of petroleum coke in India and increased imports of this product, converting it into syngas to power its refineries. Petroleum coke is a carbon-intensive solid residue left behind when residual oil is broken down into higher-value products in refinery coking units. It is well known that petroleum coke can serve as a coal substitute in steelmaking and power generation plants. 2. Reliance Consumer Products Limited announced a strategic partnership with Maliban Biscuit Factory, headquartered in Sri Lanka, to launch the latter’s brand in India. This recent move will position Reliance in direct competition with Britannia, Parle, and ITC—three companies collectively controlling over 80% of India’s biscuit market. Reliance Consumer Products Limited, the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) arm of Reliance Industries, stated that this alliance forms part of its broader objective to introduce a portfolio of both domestic and globally recognized consumer brands. 3. Reliance Retail is planning to launch a value-oriented apparel format, directly competing with Tata’s Zudio, Max (owned by Landmark Group), and Shoppers Stop’s newly launched affordable brand, InTune. The company is currently negotiating leases for spaces measuring between 6,000 and 9,000 square feet in malls and commercial streets for its new brand. The name of the new brand has not yet been disclosed. 4. The Vodafone Idea board approved, on February 25, the issuance of ₹16 billion in bonds to the ad hoc committee (ATC) ahead of an extraordinary general meeting. 5. Vedanta is reportedly abandoning its plan to sell its large Indian copper smelter. 6. India’s Income Tax Department has launched an investigation into major pharmaceutical company Cipla. As part of a suspected tax evasion probe, the department conducted raids to examine the balance sheet and other business documents of this Mumbai-headquartered firm. Notably, the Income Tax Department restricted its search to the company’s operational premises and did not conduct raids at the residences or other locations of its promoters or directors. Last week, the company reported in a regulatory filing that its consolidated net profit rose 7% to ₹8.08 billion for the quarter ended December 2022, driven by strong sales performance in the U.S. market. 7. Hinduja Renewables—the green energy division of the Hinduja Group—has joined the bidding for a majority stake in renewable energy company Fourth Partner Energy. 8. The Hinduja Group joins other bidders—including Brookfield Asset Management, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS), and U.S.-based fund I Squared Capital—in the next round of bidding. The transaction involves acquiring TPG Capital’s 52% stake in Hyderabad-based Fourth Partner Energy at an enterprise value of $650 million to $700 million (₹53 billion), along with additional primary capital infusion. According to unnamed sources, Bank of America and Investec are advising TPG on its exit. 9. After nearly six price hikes, city gas distribution company Mahanagar Gas announced on Tuesday that it would reduce the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) by ₹2.50 per kilogram to ₹87/kg, effective Wednesday. However, Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) maintained its piped natural gas (PNG) pricing unchanged. Since April 6, the CNG price has risen by ₹29.50 per kilogram, while residential PNG prices have increased by ₹18.50 per kilogram to ₹54/kg. 10. Tata Motors announced on Tuesday that it had secured the second and final tranche of ₹37.5 billion from TPG Rise Climate, pursuant to an agreement signed in 2021. In October 2021, Tata Motors announced plans to raise $1 billion from TPG Rise Climate for its passenger electric vehicle (EV) business, via mandatory convertible preference shares, to build a portfolio of investments in EVs and dedicated battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
