Industry Research | Enabling High-Speed Interconnectivity in the AI Era: Polymer Materials Open a New Track for the Optical Module Industry

Therefore, the so-called 'bottleneck' technologies essentially comprise three layers: molecular design and formulation technology of materials; precision processing and packaging process technology; and system-level reliability evaluation and failure analysis technology. In the future, truly competitive enterprises will not merely supply a specific grade of material, but will offer end-to-end services—from material development, prototype fabrication, performance testing, reliability verification, to application integration. V. Analysis of Domestic and International Enterprises From the perspective of optical module system manufacturers, Chinese enterprises have already secured an important position in the global market. In May 2026, C114 and multiple media outlets cited data from LightCounting reporting that, based on 2025 optical module sales revenue, Innolight ranked first globally, while Accelink rose to second place globally. Other Chinese enterprises—including Eoptolink, Nortek Photonics, HGTECH, Source Photonics, and Cambridge Industries—also entered the global Top 10. This indicates that China has established a strong industrial advantage in optical module manufacturing and global customer supply. However, from the materials perspective, overseas enterprises still hold a first-mover advantage across multiple high-end segments. In the PEI (polyetherimide) domain, SABIC’s ULTEM™ series boasts extensive publicly documented applications in optical lenses, MPO connectors, WDM components, and optical sensors. Its materials emphasize not only heat resistance and mechanical strength, but also near-infrared transparency, low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), optical microstructure replication capability, precision injection molding, and component integration—demonstrated through concrete application cases. The competitive edge of such enterprises lies not merely in resin grades, but rather in comprehensive material databases, collaborative customer development experience, and application engineering capabilities. In the LCP (liquid crystal polymer) domain, international players—including Sumitomo Chemical, Polyplastics, Celanese, and Solvay—possess deep expertise in high-frequency connectors, electronics & electrical applications, films, and low-dielectric materials. Sumitomo Chemical explicitly identifies LCP films and connector materials as key directions for next-generation high-speed communication applications requiring low dielectric properties. Within optical modules and high-speed interconnects, LCP delivers value primarily through low dielectric loss, low moisture absorption, heat resistance, dimensional stability, and thin-wall molding capability. In the PI/TPI (polyimide/thermoplastic polyimide) domain, Japanese, U.S., and European enterprises maintain profound expertise in polyimide films, photosensitive PI, electronic-grade PI, semiconductor packaging materials, and high-end resins. In recent years, domestic enterprises have continuously expanded their presence in PI, TPI, OLED materials, semiconductor materials, and optical communication resin materials. Guosheng Securities’ research report on Vastwin specifically lists TPI as a 'resin material for optical communication applied in optical modules', linking AI-driven demand and rapid growth in the optical module sector. This reflects growing awareness among domestic material suppliers of new material opportunities arising from optical modules. In the fields of adhesives and thermal management materials, international enterprises—including Henkel, Dow, 3M, DuPont, Shin-Etsu, and Fuji Polymer—maintain strong customer bases in electronic packaging, optical adhesives, thermal interface materials, conductive adhesives, and EMI shielding materials. Henkel’s publicly available documentation highlights its material solutions for high-speed optical modules, covering high-precision lens coupling, highly reliable structural bonding, and efficient thermal management. Dow, meanwhile, offers thermal gels and conductive adhesive solutions tailored for optical modules, emphasizing low volatility, low stress, humidity–heat resistance, and EMI shielding. Domestically, optical module manufacturers include Innolight, Accelink, Eoptolink, HGTECH, Nortek Photonics, Source Photonics, and Cambridge Industries; optical device and connector component manufacturers include TFN Communications, Sagemax Photonics, and Yuanyue Technology; and materials enterprises span PI/TPI, LCP, PPS, PEEK, adhesives, thermal management materials, and electronic chemicals.

Polymer Materials for Flexible Electronic Devices

Leveraging these diversified performance advantages, polymer materials have become critical enabling materials for next-generation flexible electronics. This section aims to explore the current state of polymer materials supporting this rapidly evolving field, outlining their functionalities, performance requirements, and emerging trends in material development. An Evolving Research Landscape: Publication Trends and Corporate Patent Dynamics To map the polymer landscape within flexible electronics, we screened literature related to polymer-based flexible electronic technologies—including journal articles and patents published between 2015 and 2025—totaling approximately 36,000 documents. These cover applications of polymers as flexible enabling materials; electronic devices engineered with enhanced flexibility and functionality using such materials; and process technologies designed to scale up manufacturing of polymer-based flexible materials and devices. Figure 40 shows that research and commercial investment in polymer-based flexible electronics exhibit significant and sustained growth. The pie chart further reveals a nearly balanced split between journal articles (52%) and patent families (48%), indicating a well-balanced scientific and industrial ecosystem in this field. Based on global filing trends, the geographical distribution of patents further reveals the technological leadership landscape in polymer-based flexible electronics. Accordingly, we analyzed corporate patent activity in this domain. As shown in the pie chart of Figure 41, patent filings are markedly regionally concentrated: China accounts for 48% of total patents—ranking first—while Japan follows closely at 26%. South Korea holds 8%, whereas Western institutions remain comparatively underrepresented: the United States accounts for 7%, Germany 2%, and France 1%. The Asia-Pacific region’s overwhelming 82% patent concentration profoundly impacts global supply chains and technology access, indicating that the majority of core intellectual property in flexible polymer electronics is controlled by Asian enterprises. The bar chart in Figure 41 highlights the top 15 patent-holding organizations (enterprises), revealing how leading chemical and materials companies position themselves to meet the growing demands of the flexible electronics industry. Sumitomo Chemical leads with 245 patent families in polymer formulations and chemical composition; Resonac and Lintec follow, focusing respectively on semiconductor-grade materials and adhesive films. This concentration among material suppliers—not electronics manufacturers—suggests that foundational innovation is occurring upstream in the chemical industry. These companies are developing enabling underlying technologies, which downstream electronics manufacturers will integrate into consumer devices. Technologically, these innovations can be grouped into three core material pillars that collectively form the foundation of the flexible electronics industry. Polyimide and Structural Film Technologies Flexible electronic materials are predominantly dominated by polyimide (PI) and polyamide-imide (PAI) film technologies—technologies that establish the structural, optical, and thermal foundations for next-generation displays. Sumitomo Chemical, Toray Industries, Arkema, Toyobo, and LG Chem lead in this domain, developing films featuring dimensional stability, low haze, heat resistance, and foldability. Their innovations include highly imidized polyamide films with high surface hardness for cover plates; 'wrinkle-suppressing' polyimide precursor systems; and heat-dissipating display substrates.
