How U.S. midterm elections shake up global commodity trading

Commodity markets have never been merely arenas where supply-demand dynamics and capital compete. Energy, food staples, and industrial metals—each price swing ripples across oceans to impact U.S. domestic politics, offering a uniquely revealing lens into the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. The U.S. dollar settlement system exports internal American political demands abroad; conversely, global commodity prices directly affect everyday Americans’ lives—and shape voters’ choices—creating a tangible, two-way tug-of-war. Ordinary U.S. citizens rarely trade commodity futures directly, yet everyone bears the real-world consequences of market volatility. When crude oil prices rise, the first visible effect is at gas station price boards. As of August 18, U.S. retail diesel prices had reached $5.47 per gallon—just shy of the all-time high of $5.82—and surged 8% in just one month. International fertilizer and grain prices ultimately show up on supermarket food bills. When industrial metal prices climb, manufacturing and transportation costs for consumer goods like appliances and automobiles rise accordingly. It is this tangible, household-level inflation—not abstract policy debates—that most concretely sways voting behavior. A Reuters-Ipsos poll released on August 17 showed Trump’s approval rating had fallen to 33%, the lowest point across both his terms, while disapproval stood at 64%. On the same day, a Financial Times poll noted that over 53% of registered U.S. voters believed their personal financial situation had worsened since Trump returned to office in 2025. Compared with politicians’ grand speeches, monthly household expenses remain the most immediate benchmark by which most people judge government performance. Turning attention back to the Middle East, crude oil spot and futures markets have remained volatile. Since late February, when military clashes erupted between the U.S./Israel and Iran, roughly one-fifth of global oil trade flows have been disrupted, pushing Brent crude near $93 per barrel. Compared to pre-conflict levels, U.S. gasoline prices have risen nearly 40%. Publicly available data estimates related expenditures from the conflict at nearly $40 billion, with at least 18 U.S. military personnel reported killed. This episode has placed significant electoral pressure on the incumbent administration. In numerous swing districts across the U.S. Midwest and South—where private vehicle use dominates daily commuting and logistics industries are large—energy constitutes a substantial share of household spending. Diesel is the lifeblood of industry. As diesel prices climb, not only do gas stations raise prices—but agricultural, logistics, and manufacturing costs surge across the board. On top of rising fertilizer prices, farmers now also face soaring fuel costs. Many farm owners complain that filling up a tractor’s tank has become another sizable expense, and grassroots discontent is quietly mounting. The opposition party naturally seizes on inflation as a key campaign lever, blaming the current administration’s policies entirely for rising living costs. Food prices likewise resonate strongly in agricultural states: farmers care about export rules, while ordinary citizens fear further food price hikes. Commodity market trends thus become ready ammunition in election-year attacks. Under electoral pressure, the White House actively intervenes in commodity markets. Releasing strategic petroleum reserves is the most frequently used tool—pumping crude into the market during critical electoral windows to temporarily lower domestic refined fuel prices and calm public sentiment. Simultaneously, the administration adjusts the pace of domestic oil-and-gas permitting approvals to court votes in energy-producing states.

Diesel hits record $6.51 per gallon; top Republican leaders collectively demand export ban—yet intra-party divisions leave implementation probability at just 35%

Pressure within the Republican Party is intensifying rapidly. With U.S. diesel prices surging to an all-time high, Republican lawmakers from agricultural states have publicly urged the Trump administration to ban diesel exports—aiming to ease fuel-cost burdens on farmers and truck drivers. On Monday, U.S. retail diesel prices climbed to a record $6.51 per gallon—up more than 70% since February, before the outbreak of the Iran war. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa took to social media platform X to directly urge Trump to suspend diesel exports, writing in all capital letters: HIGH DIESEL PRICES ARE KILLING FARM INCOME. Several other Iowa representatives followed suit the same day, calling on the White House to “stop the bleeding” through measures including an export ban, suspension of fuel taxes, and fiscal support for affected businesses. The White House has explicitly rejected this proposal. A White House official stated, “The administration is not currently considering export bans or export restrictions,” citing Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s position: an export ban would be worth considering *only if* it demonstrably lowered prices—“but that is not the case.” Energy consultancy Rapidan Energy forecasts a 35% probability that the White House will implement such an export ban. Legislative action begins to take shape At the congressional level, calls for an export ban have evolved from individual statements into concrete legislative proposals. U.S. Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee introduced two bills: one to immediately ban diesel exports until January 2027; the other to establish a price-trigger mechanism—automatically activating an export ban whenever the national average diesel price exceeds $5.00 per gallon, and lifting it only after prices fall below $4.50. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said last week he remains open to “exploring” an export ban, adding: If we have sufficient domestic supply yet continue exporting, that could be one pathway toward solving the problem. Representative Ashley Hinson called for deploying “every available option,” including suspending diesel exports and establishing a diesel relief program.
