On July 24, local time, India and the UK formally signed their Free Trade Agreement. In fact, negotiations were concluded as early as May this year. Under the UK–India FTA, 99% of Indian exports to the UK—including textiles, jewelry, and pharmaceuticals—will enjoy zero tariffs. Meanwhile, tariffs on 90% of UK exports to India will be reduced, and tariffs on 85% of such goods will be phased out entirely within 10 years. Whisky tariffs will fall from 150% → 75% → 40%; automobile tariffs will drop from 100% → 10% (under a quota system). 02. What Economic Benefits Does the FTA Bring to the UK and India? So, what economic impacts will this FTA have on both countries? First, for India, this agreement is truly a “big gift.” Once implemented, “Make in India” products will flood into Europe! Over 95% of Indian agricultural and processed food items will benefit from zero tariffs. Indian agricultural exports to the UK are projected to grow by over 20% within three years. Zero tariffs will allow low-cost Indian textiles, generic pharmaceuticals, and electronics to sweep the UK market—textile industry growth is expected at 20%, and pharmaceutical exports are forecast to double. Moreover, India’s automotive supply chain will undergo restructuring! After the agreement takes effect, UK automakers (e.g., Jaguar Land Rover) will face significantly lower costs establishing manufacturing facilities in India—pressuring domestic Indian automakers to accelerate technological upgrades.

Under the agreement, India’s import tariffs on UK whisky and gin will be halved—from 150% to 75%—and further reduced to 40% in the tenth year after the agreement enters into force. Once fully implemented, the deal is projected to add £4.8 billion annually to the UK economy. Currently, India is the largest export market for Scotch whisky by volume. According to data released by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), India imported 192 million bottles in 2024—ranking first globally. Today, Scotch whisky accounts for just 2% of India’s total whisky market—but with lower tariffs driving down prices, that share is expected to rise. Mark Kent, CEO of the SWA, stated that the agreement could increase Scotch whisky exports by £1 billion (US$1.34 billion) over the next five years and create 1,200 jobs across the UK. 05 Whisky Cask Investment Firm Claiming $80 Million in Assets Declares Bankruptcy According to Forbes magazine, Scottish whisky cask investment firms Cask 88 and Braeburn Whisky—affiliated with Edinburgh-based Whisky Merchants Trading Ltd, which claimed to manage $80 million in whisky cask assets—have undergone significant layoffs and entered administration. Braeburn Whisky is now under bankruptcy administration, while its parent company, Teaghglach Holdings, has filed for “voluntary strike-off” with Companies House in the UK.
