What is 'Project Freedom' and what is its stated purpose according to Trump?

According to the news, 'Project Freedom' is a U.S. initiative announced by President Donald Trump to guide neutral ships trapped in the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday; its stated purpose is humanitarian — to free up ships whose large crews are running out of food and other necessities while waiting for safe passage, and to assist countries that have formally requested U.S. help in freeing their vessels.

Does the U.S. plan involve direct naval escorts for the ships under 'Project Freedom'?

No, the plan does not currently involve U.S. Navy escorts; instead, it relies on a coordination process among countries, insurance companies, and shipping organizations, as reported by the Wall Street Journal citing an unnamed U.S. official.
