Do you think Trump and the Republican Party can win this year’s midterm elections?

The Republicans’ most painful challenge is that electoral danger has spread from several traditional swing districts to previously relatively safe ones. The Cook Political Report recently adjusted 18 House races simultaneously in the Democrats’ favor; among the 21 closely contested districts, 15 are currently held by Republicans. Democrats need to flip only a small number of these seats to cross the 218-seat majority threshold. The Senate picture is even tighter: Republicans currently hold a 53–47 majority, and Democrats need to gain four net seats to reach a majority without Vice Presidential tie-breaking power. Under past electoral maps, this would have been an extremely difficult task—but this year, Republicans face an unusually large number of vulnerable seats. Races in Alaska, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Iowa have all entered competitive territory. Inside Elections currently projects Democrats gaining between three and five Senate seats. The Hill and Decision Desk HQ models assign Democrats a 56% probability of winning control of the Senate, forecasting a final composition of 51 Democratic seats and 49 Republican seats. This narrow margin indicates the Senate remains essentially a coin toss—just one or two states experiencing polling errors could flip control. Trump’s impact on the GOP is also clear-cut: while his supporters remain fiercely loyal and help boost Republican base turnout, midterm elections hinge on winning over suburban voters, independents, and those disillusioned with both parties—groups whose top concerns are cost-of-living pressures, the economy, and war—precisely the areas where Trump scores lowest in public approval. According to the AP-NORC poll released on October 15, only about one-third of registered voters approve of Trump’s overall performance in office; roughly 80% disapprove of how he’s handling the cost-of-living crisis, and about 75% disapprove of his economic stewardship. Democratic voters also show higher enthusiasm than Republican voters, and independents hold especially negative views of the GOP. Midterm elections historically function as a check on the incumbent president: having granted him power, voters often use congressional elections two years later to apply the brakes. Trump, meanwhile, consistently frames every election as a loyalty test to himself—a strategy that suppresses intra-party dissent but also transforms local races into referenda on Trump himself, pressuring voters who merely wanted to elect a city councilor or state legislator to cast their ballot as a verdict on Trump. Republicans still retain pathways to victory: Senate races are decided state-by-state, giving the GOP geographic advantages; campaign funding remains robust; and Trump’s core supporters typically turn out more strongly on Election Day than polls suggest. If energy prices fall sharply and the war situation visibly de-escalates, and if Republicans concentrate resources effectively in key swing states, they could well retain control of the Senate.

Trump says he’ll spend over $400 million to support Republican candidates in the midterms—potentially making this the most expensive midterm election in U.S. history. What are the Republicans’ chances of winning?

The odds of Republicans retaining control of both chambers stand at roughly 50%. On a scale of 100, their total score is 50. The $400 million likely comes from the Trump-aligned super PAC 'Make America Great Again,' which cannot donate directly to candidates but may spend independently on advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts. Total ad spending for this year’s midterms is projected at $11.6 billion—so $400 million accounts for about 3.4%. In the House, Republicans’ prospects are bleak. Democrats need only gain three to five seats to regain control. Polymarket currently prices Democrats’ odds of retaking the House at 90%. According to a Fox News poll from October, 54% of respondents prefer Democrats to control Congress versus 45% for Republicans—a nine-point lead. In 2018, Democrats gained 41 seats largely due to a mass shift among educated suburban women—a demographic cohort that remains intact and active today. The Senate, however, presents a real contest. Democrats need 51 seats to secure control (a 50–50 split would leave control with Republicans via the Vice President’s tie-breaking vote, so 50 seats alone are insufficient). Of the 35 Senate seats up for election this year, Republicans must defend fewer vulnerable seats than Democrats do. Only a handful offer genuine flipping opportunities: Maine, North Carolina, Alaska, and Texas. According to polling expert Frank Luntz’s forecast: Democrats flip Maine and Alaska; Texas remains a toss-up; the final tally ends at 50–50, allowing Republicans to retain control via the Vice President’s tie-breaking vote. Thus, the Senate will not change hands. — So how much impact will this money actually have? In the 2020 presidential primaries, Bloomberg spent approximately $1 billion—and won only American Samoa, securing just six delegates. Money cannot buy voters’ belief that a candidate ‘deserves to win.’ But it *can* buy turnout—and midterm outcomes often hinge precisely on which side’s supporters are more motivated to show up at the polls. Elon Musk’s 2024 lottery-style voter mobilization effort in Pennsylvania generated mixed results and debate over its effectiveness—but its underlying logic was sound.
