With rising chronic disease prevalence, global cancer cases are expected to increase 1.8-fold between 2022 and 2050, and the number of people living with diabetes is projected to rise 1.5-fold between 2022 and 2045. Biologics serve as the primary engine of growth for innovative drugs, representing 45% of the market today and projected to grow at an annual rate of 10%, capturing 55% of the market by 2030. The increasing adoption of biologic therapies signals strong future growth: in 2023 alone, 25 novel biologics for oncology were launched globally. Of the top 20 best-selling drugs in 2023, 15 were biologics. India’s pharmaceutical industry remains in the early stages of innovative drug development but demonstrates immense potential. Indian pharma companies are ramping up R&D investment and pursuing innovation through licensing-in, licensing-out, and in-house R&D—focusing on large, fast-growing therapeutic areas like oncology, or targeting rare diseases and novel modalities such as cell and gene therapies, while leveraging AI to accelerate drug discovery. Simultaneously, the Indian government is actively promoting innovative drug development. In its FY 2026–2027 budget, India unveiled the ‘Biopharma SHAKTI’ (Strategic Healthcare Advancement through Knowledge, Technology & Innovation) initiative—a plan to position India as a global biopharmaceutical hub. The program will allocate INR 100 billion over the next five years.
