Yet their performances relative to market expectations diverged. On Friday local time, ExxonMobil reported second-quarter earnings: adjusted net income reached $14.7 billion, up 67% quarter-on-quarter—the highest in four years—but still fell short of Wall Street forecasts. Chevron, by contrast, delivered an earnings beat: adjusted net income hit $12 billion, marking at least a six-year quarterly high. Both companies benefited from rising international oil prices and improved refining margins during the quarter. Escalating U.S.-Iran tensions restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, intensifying global concerns over energy supply security. Brent crude averaged $96.68 per barrel in Q2—up 23% from Q1. Yet geopolitical risk cuts both ways. ExxonMobil holds substantial assets in the Middle East, some of which suffered production impacts; Chevron, with comparatively low Middle Eastern output, reaped more of the profit upside from elevated oil prices. Following the earnings release, ExxonMobil’s stock fell nearly 2% in pre-market trading before narrowing losses; as of this writing, it was down 1.4% intraday. Chevron’s stock rose about 2% pre-market and extended gains slightly during regular trading—up 2.2% as of this writing. ExxonMobil’s profit hits a four-year high—but refining and upstream segments still miss expectations ExxonMobil’s Q2 adjusted net income stood at $14.7 billion, or $3.52 per share—more than double year-on-year—but below the $3.60 per share consensus forecast compiled by London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). Hansen stated: “These facilities remain largely offline—and LNG output has barely recovered.” He added that Qatar currently maintains domestic natural gas output of roughly 150,000 boepd, while an Abu Dhabi field produces about 250,000 barrels per day—of which approximately 50,000 barrels per day remain shut in.

However, the $13.70 price differential between Brent and WTI cannot be simply reduced by subtracting the $40-per-barrel freight cost from the U.S. to Asia to calculate arbitrage profit—given differences in delivery locations, pricing terms, and product specifications. What we can confirm is: transportation costs provide a major explanation for the widening spread—but regional supply-demand imbalances, crude quality differentials, and geopolitical risk also play significant roles. V. The most intriguing development: soaring freight rates are now suppressing crude demand Another highly noteworthy phenomenon in this oil cycle is how rising transport costs are reshaping demand. When Strait of Hormuz risks first escalated, Asian refiners—fearing Middle Eastern supply disruptions—increased purchases of alternative crudes from the U.S. and West Africa. This boosted overseas demand for U.S. crude, meaning WTI—even when relatively cheaper—could rise alongside international benchmarks. But once freight costs surged to $30–$40 per barrel, the calculus shifted. Although U.S. and West African crudes remained physically available, they became economically unattractive. Some Asian refiners consequently revised procurement strategies—opting for smaller tankers, long-term charter contracts, or more seller-delivered cargoes. Thus, the same Strait of Hormuz risk triggered two opposite outcomes—in sequence. Initially, fear of Middle Eastern shipping disruption prompted Asian buyers to increase imports from other regions. Later, prohibitively high ocean freight rates caused them to scale back long-haul purchases. High freight costs initially raised supply expenses—but beyond a certain threshold, they began eroding trade demand. This implies transport-related price support for oil is not limitless. Rising prices alter procurement behavior—and those behavioral shifts, in turn, reshape regional price dynamics. That is precisely where the crude market’s true complexity lies. VI. Who profits from this energy crisis? This is another key finding emerging from our recent research. At first glance, many assume rising oil prices squeeze refiners’ margins—since their raw material costs increase. In reality, it’s not that simple. Refiners care most about the difference between refined product prices and feedstock costs—that is, refining margins. On October 22, U.S. refiner Valero reported third-quarter earnings: attributable net income for FY2026 Q3 totaled approximately $6.8 billion—versus about $1.1 billion a year earlier. Per-barrel refining margin jumped from $13.14 to $39.24—a near-tripling. Refining segment operating profit soared from roughly $1.6 billion to $8.8 billion. This shows that amid tight global supplies of diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel, some refiners can still earn outsized profits—even facing higher crude costs—because refined product prices rose even faster. The result is a fascinating redistribution of value: • Crude producers gain revenue from higher oil prices; • Refiners with procurement advantages and processing capabilities capture high margins; • Shipping firms and vessel owners command premium rates amid tight tonnage availability. Meanwhile, farmers, airlines, logistics companies, and ordinary consumers bear the brunt—paying significantly higher fuel prices. On October 19, average U.S. regular gasoline stood at $4.284 per gallon; highway diesel averaged $6.276 per gallon. Hence, U.S. energy companies’ gains do not equate to benefits for all Americans.
