Equinor discovers new oil field in the North Sea

According to the press release, Equinor also discovered oil in the Hummer deposit. Preliminary estimates indicate that the Hummer deposit ranges in size from 3.53 million to 21.2 million cubic feet (equivalent to 100,000 to 600,000 standard cubic meters of oil equivalent). The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate stated that the two wells are the first and second wells drilled under Production Licence 827 SB, an extension area of Production Licence 827 S—the original discovery site. Drilling was carried out using the Deepsea Stavanger drilling rig, located approximately 87 miles (140 km) northwest of Bergen. According to the press release, the primary exploration target for well 35/10-11 S was to delineate the Heisenberg discovery in the Lower Horda Group (35/10-9) of the Eocene epoch. The secondary exploration target was the Hummer deposit within the Upper Paleocene–Lower Eocene Balder Formation. Well 35/10-11 S encountered a total of approximately 32.8 feet (10 meters) of sandstone reservoirs in the Horda Group, with good reservoir quality. This reservoir is water-bearing and contains minor hydrocarbons. In the secondary exploration target—within the Balder Formation—the well encountered a 9.8-foot (3-meter) oil column within sandstone, totaling 75.5 feet (23 meters), with poor-to-moderate reservoir quality. The well was drilled to a measured depth of 6,079 feet (1,853 meters) below sea level and terminated in the Paleocene Rogaland Group. Meanwhile, well 35/10-11 A encountered medium-to-high-quality sandstone reservoirs totaling approximately 39.4 feet (12 meters) in thickness. This reservoir contains an oil-and-gas column within the Horda Group. The gas-oil contact lies at 5,154 feet (1,571 meters) below sea level; the oil-water contact lies at 5,170.6 feet (1,576 meters) below sea level. The well was drilled to a measured depth of 1,690 meters below sea level and terminated in the Eocene Horda Group.

Equinor discovers oil and gas in the Norwegian North Sea

Equinor announced the discovery of oil and gas in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, near the Fram field, with an estimated size ranging between 13 million and 28 million barrels of oil equivalent. In a statement, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate noted that the state-owned exploration and production company—and its partners—made the discovery primarily in wells 35/11-30 S and 35/11-30 A (collectively referred to as “Rhombi”) within Production Licence 090. An online statement added: “In recent years, extensive exploration activity in the so-called Fram licence and surrounding production licences has already yielded several discoveries.” Operator Equinor stated: “This is the first discovery in the area this year, in addition to a previously drilled appraisal well.” In a statement on its website, Equinor added: “The discovery lies in a part of the North Sea where 12 discoveries were made between 2018 and 2023.” Equinor indicated that the consortium plans to develop the newly discovered resources in conjunction with existing infrastructure, with “slightly more than half” consisting of natural gas. Geir Sørtveit, Senior Vice President for Exploration and Production at Equinor, said: “This is an exciting discovery in one of our core areas with well-developed oil and gas infrastructure. We are actively exploring this region and have made numerous discoveries here in recent years. We are now assessing how best to develop these discoveries to ensure efficient resource utilization, strong profitability, and low emissions.” The joint venture comprises Equinor Energy AS holding a 45% stake; Vår Energi ASA holding 40%; and INPEX Idemitsu Norge AS holding the remaining 15%.
