Pact Group Holdings, Asahi Beverages and Cleanaway Waste Management are building Australia's largest PET recycling plant in the Albury-Wodonga region after forming a joint venture and spending A$45 million ($32 million) to build the recycling plant

    .

The plant in New South Wales is expected to be fully operational in October, two months ahead of schedule and just 14 months after the three companies set up the joint venture

    .

The new plant will recycle the equivalent of one billion 600ml PET bottles per year and will be used to produce more than 20,000 tonnes of new rPET bottles and food packaging each year, making it the largest "end-to-end" rPET plant in Australia

    .

Pact Group Holdings said this would increase the amount of recycled PET produced in Australia - from the current 30,000 tonnes/year to more than 50,000 tonnes/year

    .

The project is part of the NSW Government's Waste Less, Recycle More initiative

    .

Robert Iervasi, group chief executive of Asahi Beverages, said: "This will be a recycling plant with a world-class rPET facility that will help transform Australia's recycling capabilities and the Albury-Wodonga region should be proud of its contribution to Australian manufacturing and recycling.

    .

Sanjay Dayal, managing director and chief executive of Pact Group Holdings, said: “Australians are changing attitudes towards recycling, with a recent poll by research firm Quantum showing that three-quarters of Australians want to recycle in their packaging.
