The CFIP technology, developed and patented by the Eurecat Technology Center, has won the JEC World Innovation Award in the Additive Manufacturing category for its innovation
.
The technology uses continuous carbon fibers to reinforce 3D-printed parts, increasing strength and reducing weight
.
Marc Crescenti, head of the advanced simulation line at the Eurecat Technology Centre and lead developer of this new method, said: "CFIP (Continuous Fiber Injection Process) technology is a new post-processing system that injects continuous reinforcing fibers such as carbon fibers into parts made by 3D printing or other types of technologies
.
These advantages include the possibility of laying the reinforcing fibers in all directions, thus allowing complete freedom to follow complex pre-defined routes
.
"This means that we can place the fibers exactly in the most efficient direction, which further improves the mechanical properties," he added
.
The technology also enhances various types of materials, including plastics, metals and ceramics
.
CFIP technology also offers the option to "utilize the fiber continuity between them to integrally connect different components", thus providing joints with extremely high performance
.
