Agilent Technologies (NYSE: A) today announced the launch of the enhanced 8700 LDIR laser infrared imaging system
    .
    The system is further optimized
for the analysis of microplastics in environmental samples.
This new and improved system package also includes Clarity 1.
5 software, a major upgrade that accelerates analysis, enhances spectral acquisition, transformation, and library matching, and provides automated workflows for direct analysis of microplastics
    on membranes.
A redesigned, innovative sample holder makes it easier to deliver samples on the membrane to the instrument and operate more consistently
    .

The widespread presence of microplastics in the environment has become a growing global concern, prompting governments to pay more attention to microplastic pollution, while environmental agencies have stepped up monitoring
    of rivers and oceans.
To fully assess microplastic contamination in the environment, researchers need to determine the size, shape, and chemical characteristics of plastic particles in a sample, but because smaller particles tend to have stronger biological relevance, the analysis must be extended to micron-sized particles
    .

The main challenge in microplastics analysis is the long analysis cycle and complex operation, which hinders the study
    of real-world systems.
In addition, methodological differences also limit comparability between studies, making it difficult to assess microplastic pollution trends
    .
Vibrational spectroscopy such as FTIR and Raman microscopy techniques offer a useful alternative, but these are limited
due to long analysis times and overly complex methods.

The VAgilent 8700 LDIR combines the speed and ease of use of infrared spectroscopy and quickly becomes the benchmark technology
    for microplastic particle analysis.
The platform's ability to analyze particles directly on the membrane marks another leap
    in speed and throughput.
A significant increase in the volume of testing will allow researchers to better understand the extent of microplastic contamination in the environment and help develop reasonable standards and regulations
    .

Geoff Winkett, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Molecular Spectroscopy Group, said, "When I talk to microplastics researchers, one of the recurring questions is how to make detection faster and easier
    .
If the number of samples actually processed is limited, this may obscure the true nature of
    the problem.
Currently, other available technologies have too long analysis cycles and cannot capture large amounts of microplastics
    in drinking and ambient water.
Rapid and easy-to-use analytical methods, such as the 8700 LDIR, provide an important and much-needed alternative to these limitations
by enabling researchers to collect more samples in a certain area or time.

As a premier provider of food and environmental analysis solutions, Agilent is committed to providing academic research and commercial testing companies with outstanding technology
    that improves user outcomes.
The introduction of the enhanced 8700 LDIR is expected to strengthen Agilent's position
at the forefront of this growing market.
