The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved a US$75 million loan to Cambodia Fiber Optic Communications Network Co.

(CFOCN) to improve the speed and quality of the country's Internet, the first loan
from the AIIB to Cambodia.
According to reports, the loan will be used to build Cambodia's nearly 2,000 kilometers of urban and regional fiber backbone network to cover major cities, suburbs and rural areas
.
According to AIIB, the project is expected to support the government's information technology and telecommunications (ICT) initiatives to help achieve 100 percent broadband coverage in cities and 70 percent coverage
in rural areas.
The fibre optic backbone network will cover five provinces, namely Kampot, Prey Veng, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Thom and Pursat
.
It is understood that the fiber optic backbone network will cost $35 million this year, $35 million in 2020, and another $5 million to pay for other expenses
.
The AIIB said the project will improve economic efficiency and boost Cambodia's digital business system
