    According to the Oil & Gas Journal website reported on May 14 by Baker Hughes, the number of drilling rigs in the United States increased by 5 to 453 in the week of May 14, compared with 339 in the same period last year.


    The number of onshore drilling rigs increased by 3 from last week to a total of 437; the number of offshore drilling rigs increased by 2 to 15.


    The number of US oil directional drilling rigs increased by 8 from last week to 352, compared with 258 in the same period last year.


    Among the major oil and gas producing states, Louisiana has the largest increase in the number of drilling rigs, increasing by 3 to 55.


    Oklahoma, North Dakota and Alaska each added one, bringing the number of rigs to 21, 16 and 4 respectively.


    The number of drilling rigs in Texas decreased by one to 216.


    The number of rigs in eight states remained the same this week: 70 in New Mexico, 11 in West Virginia, 10 in Colorado, 10 in Ohio, 9 in Utah, 6 in California, 4 in Wyoming, and 3 in Alaska.


    The number of Canadian rigs increased by 4 to 59, 36 more than 23 in the same period last year.

      Baker Hughes: US rig count up 5 units to 453

      The US drilling rig count increased by 5 units to reach 453 rigs working for the week ended May 14, according to Baker Hughes data.


      The number of rigs drilling on land was up 3 units week-over-week with a total of 437.


      US oil-directed rigs were up 8 rigs from last week at 352 units.


      Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Louisiana saw the largest increase.


      Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Alaska gained a single unit each to reach 21, 16, and 4 rigs running for the week.


      Texas dropped a single rig to hit 216 for the week.


      Eight states remained unchanged this week, namely New Mexico, 70; West Virginia, 11; Colorado, 10; Ohio, 10; Utah, 9; California, 6; Wyoming, 4; and Alaska, 3.


      Canada's rig count increased by 4 units to 59 rigs drilling for the week.
