BASF and BillerudKorsnäs develop unique home compostable laminate for flexible packaging

On December 3 , 2020 , BASF and Swedish packaging manufacturer BillerudKorsnä have developed a unique home compostable laminate for flexible packaging .
The laminated paper consists of three basic parts: BillerudKorsnäs ' ConFlex® Silk paper, which is certified BASF compostable at home, a sealing layer made of ecovio® , a partially bio-based biopolymer , and bonding the paper to the sealing layer BASF's water-based laminating adhesive Epotal® Eco 3675 X.

On December 3 , 2020 , BASF and Swedish packaging manufacturer BillerudKorsnä have developed a unique home compostable laminate for flexible packaging .

This new home compostable solution offers the same properties as traditional multi-layer packaging: puncture resistance, good printability, excellent heat sealability, and can be processed on standard packaging machines

Amir Pourirani, Head of Global Markets for Biopolymers at BASF, said: “We designed this product to create a paper laminate with good heat sealability using 100% certified home compostable materials

Markus Saari, Business Development Manager at BillerudKorsnäs, said: "BASF's certified home compostable biopolymers and adhesives are the ideal material composition to help the flexible packaging in our product range take a new step towards discovering new sustainable solutions.

Sealable laminates are produced using a wet lamination process

The laminated paper is easy to seal and is suitable for both mono- and co-extrusion processes
