com BASF announced on July 12 that it plans to build a new battery recycling test device at its Schwarzheide cathode active material production base in Germany
    .

The device will support the development of recycling processes and achieve continuous optimization of technology, and efficiently recover lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese from scrap lithium-ion batteries, battery manufacturers and battery material manufacturers

BASF said that the electric vehicle market is expected to grow rapidly in the future, and recycling will provide a competitive and sustainable way to obtain metal raw materials for positive electrode active materials
    .

The recycled metal will be used to produce new positive electrode active materials, helping to achieve a circular economy in the battery value chain

    Dr.
Matthias Dohrn, Senior Vice President of BASF’s Precious Metals and Basic Metals Services Business Unit, said: “Through investing in battery recycling and leading production technology for cathode active materials, we aim to achieve a “closed loop” and compare the carbon dioxide footprint of BASF’s cathode active materials.
The industry standard is reduced by 60%
    .

This will enable us to meet the needs of car companies and customers, while also helping to achieve a more sustainable future

This investment is expected to create about 35 new production jobs, and plans to start the installation in early 2023
    .

The Schwarzheide production site is located in Brandenburg in eastern Germany
