The Natural Source Waters Association (NSWA) says consumer confusion over the term "single-use" plastic bottles is hurting recycling
.
NSWA is urging consumers to stop thinking of plastic bottles as "single-use" after 30% of Britons were unaware that plastic bottles were fully recyclable
.
According to the NSWA, the confusion is causing people to turn 100 per cent recyclable PET plastic bottles into regular waste
.
Nearly half (46%) of respondents said they believed the term "single-use plastic" meant that the item described had to be landfilled or incinerated
.
The NSWA has warned that this confusion over the term 'single-use plastic' could negatively impact recycling rates for plastic beverage containers in the UK
.
Bryan McCluskey, director of recycling at NSWA, said: "If we're really going to increase recycling rates, we all need to use clear, positive language
.
The group pointed out that the term "single-use plastic" has been unfairly demonized by consumers
.
At last month's Davos forum, Coca-Cola ruled out phasing out single-use plastic bottles because people need it
.
Coca-Cola's recent advertising campaign also declared: "Single-use plastic bottles are only reused when they are thrown away
.
The plastic in our bottles can be recycled many times
.
"
However, some activists are calling for plastic bottles to be discarded entirely
.
Sian Sutherland of the Plastic Planet campaign said: "Once again the plastic crisis has been shamefully pushed at the feet of consumers
.
We should make it clear that the constant pursuit of recycling to tackle plastic waste is misleading, rather than using the word 'disposable'
.
"
“The truth is that only 9% of plastic is recycled (once, rarely twice)
.
Whether or not plastic is recycled, it ends up either being incinerated, going to landfill, or polluting our planet
.
Recycled, but plastic is still being produced at an alarming and increasing rate
.
Rather than justifying our use of plastic with words, take responsibility for the crisis and address the problem at the source
.
Any solution that doesn’t It will not help solve the problem of plastic pollution and will only delay real change
.
"
NSWA called for "clear and balanced descriptions on packaging", citing the Green Coalition's Plastics Commitment report, which warned of the consequences of demonising plastics and rushed to find alternatives, "to avoid simply using new Environmental problems replace the risks of current environmental problems”
.
The NSWA said they hope to increase recycling rates by encouraging consumers to recycle items such as PET beverage bottles, which will help prevent these items from ending up in landfills or polluting the environment
.
A spokesman noted: "The problem appears to be that the term 'single-use plastic' applies to both non-recyclable and recyclable items, which has led to confusion when dealing with these items
.
We are concerned that putting beverage bottles etc.
Recyclables and non-recyclable items like straws, blenders and cotton swabs are placed under the heading of 'single-use plastics' and cause people not to recycle them
.
"
"Our research was only on beverage packaging, so we cannot comment on whether this question is specific to beverage packaging, but because all plastic beverage bottles are 100% recyclable and 100% collected by local authorities
.
Our intention is to Highlight the findings of this study and encourage the use of clearer language
.
"
“We want the recyclable packaging to be clearly written so people know how to recycle
.
We don’t want to see recyclable materials go to landfill and get lost, or worse still end up in the environment
.
All PET beverage bottles can be 100 % recyclable, which reduces the amount of virgin plastic required
.
If a beverage bottle is placed in the wrong bin, it may not be recycled
.
