Chile's Ministry of Communications (MTTS) recently announced that the bidding for the remaining land-based sections of the $100 million "Fibra Optica Austral" optical fiber network project has begun

The project, which was put on hold in October 2016 but relaunched in May 2017, aims to deploy nearly 4,000 kilometers of fibre infrastructure
in southern Patagonia.
According to local media reports, in August 2017, during the bidding period for the submarine cable part of the project, a total of four companies provided quotations, namely Telefonica, a Spanish telecommunications company, with a quotation of US$82.
