Ultraviolet C (UVC) lamps, already widely used for water disinfection, are also increasingly being used to disinfect surfaces
.
Together with Crystal IS, the world's leading UVC LED manufacturer, Covestro is investigating the impact of UVC disinfection on polycarbonate-based materials
.
These initial tests measured color casts and aesthetic changes in plastic parts, and the results were largely dependent on the starting color
.
The clear Makrolon® polycarbonate has a slight yellowing with a ΔE of 3, which can only be seen on close inspection
.
“As disinfection technologies are increasingly sought in automotive applications, we are helping OEMs and designers identify material solutions to meet these growing needs,” said Rudy Gorny, Senior Chief Scientist Mobility at Covestro Automotive
.
“Through preliminary testing of Crystal IS, we found that Bayblend® PC + ABS blends and Makrolon® polycarbonate may be best suited for applications requiring UVC disinfection,” said Paul Nowatzki, Senior Product Specialist for Healthcare at Covestro.
"We look forward to expanding this study
.
"UVC LEDs enable the development of innovative on-demand solutions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other pathogens," said Larry Felton, President of Crystal IS
.
Covestro and Crystal IS are now investigating the effects of prolonged exposure to UVC on physical properties such as heat resistance, tensile strength and impact resistance
