LONDON, Jan.
Like other petrochemicals, isocyanate and polyol prices have collapsed amid declining macroeconomic factors and ongoing trade tensions that have clouded global markets throughout 2019
Near the end of the fourth quarter, the price of crude methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), a raw material for rigid polyurethane foam used in construction and insulation, was one percentage point higher than the lowest price since ICIS began reporting in 2002
Its isocyanate two-component, pure MDI (the raw material for polyurethane foam for shoes) performed slightly better, but prices have been on a continuous downward trend since October 2018 and are currently at a two-and-a-half-year low
Equally bad, prices for the surface-active substance toluene diisocyanate (TDI), used in soft foam bedding and furniture, fell to less than half what they were at a 14-year low in May 2018
Meanwhile, polyols, the compounds that react with isocyanates to form and measure the properties of polyurethane polymers, are at their lowest point in more than three years
