    German grid company Amprion is seeking permission from the grid agency to deploy a high-voltage power line to transmit offshore wind power from the North Sea inland

    The 300 km power line, called A-Nord, will extend from Port Emden to Osterrath and represents a transition link in Germany's ongoing energy transition, from fossil fuels to renewable energies
    .

    The project will bring two gigawatts of electricity to the populous industrial areas of North Rhine-Westphalia, equivalent to more than one large nuclear reactor
    .

    The A-Nord power line will be extended to Düsseldorf to join
    another planned Ultranet line.

    Amprion, which is controlled by the German Rheinland Group, envisages extending the Ultranet line to Philippsburg in Baden-Württemberg, where a nuclear reactor operated by Baden-Württemberg Energy (EnBW) will be shut down
    at the end of next year.

    Unlike the AC lines commonly found in Europe, A-Nord power lines will use DC power transmission to accelerate point-to-point delivery

    BnetzA said it plans to announce the plans in May, along with a public consultation

    Two more such north-south power lines, SuedOstLink and SuedLink, are also planned and could be completed
    around 2025.
