Greiner Packaging has taken the next step in developing more sustainable plastic packaging solutions
    .
The German family-owned company is looking at options ranging from reducing material usage and designing for recycling, to utilizing alternative materials and exploring the potential of multi-purpose packaging

    .

The use of alternative materials, such as post-industrial waste from in-house production processes, is already standard practice
    .
In addition, in addition to investigating the possibilities offered by mechanically recycled post-consumer waste and chemically recycled recyclates, Greiner is also testing renewable materials, such as those offered by Austrian polyolefin manufacturer Borealis' Bornewables portfolio

    .

Currently, the company has produced the first samples made of Borealis' renewable, mass-balanced PP, complete with in-mold labels as a decorative technology
    .

Unlike renewable feedstocks produced from crops grown for food and livestock feed, Bornewables products are made from second-generation feedstocks derived entirely from waste and residue streams: such as from vegetable oil production as well as petroleum, or from the wood industry, or Waste and residues from the food industry
    .

These products have the same properties as virgin polyolefin materials, but with a significantly reduced carbon footprint
    .

"The Bornewables portfolio is a key step in our efforts to provide products that are decoupled from traditional feedstocks and designed to provide solutions to the CO2 challenge
    .
We are focused on our customers' needs and value chain and are committed to driving the transition of plastics to a circular economy

    .
" Borealis Consumer Goods Marketing Director Trevor Davis said

    .

According to a life cycle analysis initiated by Borealis at the Kallo plant in Belgium, the use of Bornewables can significantly reduce the cost of the product; the carbon footprint per kilogram of polymer is reduced by at least 2.
    7 kg of CO2 equivalent

    .
This means savings of up to 120% compared to fossil-based PP from Borealis, in addition to a reduction in consumption of fossil resources of around 69%

    .

The entire Bornewables product line has been certified as part of ISCC PLUS
    .
Certification is based on a mass balance approach, which means that in every material stream there is a contribution to the use of chemically recycled or renewable materials

    .
Some of Greiner Packaging's factories have also obtained ISCC PLUS certification
