The top 10 countries for new hydropower capacity in 2018 were China (8,540 MW), Brazil (3,866 MW), Pakistan (2,487 MW), Turkey (1,085 MW), Angola (668 MW), Tajikistan (605 MW), Ecuador (556 MW), India (535 MW), Norway (419 MW) and Canada (401 MW).

"Hydropower projects generated a record 4,200 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2018, the highest contribution
from renewable energy.
Hydropower capacity installed globally climbed to 1,292 GW," the report added
.
Regionally, East Asia and the Asia-Pacific region became the world's largest hydropower regional market with 9169 MW, followed by South America with 4855 MW, followed by South and Central Asia with 3962 MW, Europe with 2202 MW, Africa with 1009 MW, and North and Central America with 620 MW
.
In addition, pumped hydro storage reached 160.

Overall, at least 48 countries added hydropower capacity
in 2018.
"Four years after the UN agreed on the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, governments are increasingly recognizing the vital role hydropower plays in national strategies to provide affordable clean electricity, manage fresh water, combat climate change and improve livelihoods," IHA said
