    According to the World Bank, World Bank support to the MENA region exceeded $4.
    75 billion in fiscal 2021, helping countries respond to the needs created by the pandemic, including access to vaccines, while strengthening health, education, and social protection systems

    In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021, new commitments to IBRD in the Middle East and North Africa totalled $3.

    "The pandemic has put an even greater test of the region's already tense resilience and taken a devastating toll
    on people in the MENA region.
    It also heightens the urgency for policymakers to make further reforms to address their country's long-term development challenges," said

    "The World Bank's response is helping countries and their people cope with the ongoing health, social and economic impacts of the crisis, but more needs to be done

    We remain committed to working with countries in the region to continue to fight the pandemic and address their immediate climate mitigation and water management priorities to forge a green, resilient and inclusive development path

    This year, the World Bank approved 35 new engagements in the MENA region, including one focused on responding to Covid-19 – across health, business, and social safety net systems – and focusing on climate-smart investments for resilient recovery
    .

    In addition, there are initiatives to reduce air pollution in Greater Cairo, including $200 million in Egypt; Invest $500 million in Jordan to stimulate climate-smart public and private investment to help accelerate recovery, create more jobs and strengthen green growth opportunities; A $250 million project in Morocco to support the economic integration of youth in rural areas and improve marketing efficiency and environmental sustainability
    in agri-food value chains.

    In Tunisia, the Bank provided $300 million in financial support to some 1 million vulnerable families and more than 100,000 children

    In Yemen, the Bank strengthened emergency social protection
    through $203.
    9 million in grants to help target food-insecure households.

    In addition to strengthening health systems, the Bank responded to requests
    for support for Covid-19 vaccines.
    Vaccine financing includes the reallocation of $34 million
    to citizens and refugees in Lebanon.
    The Bank also approved support for the Covid-19 vaccination program in Tunisia ($100 million), as well as additional financing, including cofinancing
    , for Jordan ($63.
    5 million) and Yemen ($20 million).

    Other crises have exacerbated the impact of the pandemic on the region, such as volatile oil prices and increased
    instability and vulnerability in some countries.
    Immediately after the Beirut port bombing in August 2020 and the violence in Gaza in May 2021, the World Bank conducted a damage and needs assessment
    in cooperation with the United Nations and the European Union.
