To reach an agreement on an impasse sanctions package to satisfy Hungary's opposition, the European Union will propose to delay restrictions
on Russian oil imports from a key pipeline.

According to people familiar with the matter, the EU's executive agency is expected to release a revised proposal that would temporarily exempt oil from transporting oil through the Druzhba giant pipeline
    .

Since sea supply accounts for about two-thirds of Russia's oil imports, the proposal initially planned to phase out sea freight
    .

Once a technical solution is found to meet the energy needs of Hungary and other major landlocked countries, transport
to Druzhba will subsequently be expanded.

Such a compromise would buy time
for the EU and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to finalize the technical details of phasing out pipeline supplies to Hungary.

    Hungary has been blocking plans
to ban Russian oil for weeks.

The EU had previously proposed phasing out all Russian oil imports by early next year, with Hungary and Slovakia granted exemptions until 2024

These countries are heavily dependent on Russian oil, but they account for a relatively small
percentage of the EU's total imports from Russia.
