Recently, the National Wind Energy Institute (MNRE), an independent agency under India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, has called for the development of India's first offshore wind energy project
.
The world aims to include potential offshore wind developers in the 1,000 MW offshore wind project
in Hambat Bay, off the coast of Gujarat.
The proposed area is located 23-40 km from
the sea in the port of Pipaav.
MNRE plans to install at least 5GW of offshore wind capacity
by 2022.
According to the National Offshore Wind Policy notified in October 2015, the National Wind Energy Institute is the node body that conducts the necessary studies/surveys prior to the final tender and serves as a single window to facilitate the necessary approvals for the development
of offshore wind projects in India.
It has been observed that in terms of offshore wind energy efficiency on a global scale, although it is better than onshore wind power, it is also competitive and comparable in terms of electricity prices
.
With the rise of India's large energy market, it is expected to attract strong interest
from leading companies of offshore wind turbine manufacturers and developers.
Indian industry can also work with
global players.
With the announcement of the first offshore wind project, the government is trying to develop this sector in India and plans to replicate the success
similar to that in the onshore wind sector.
This will help the country achieve energy security and meet the goals of
the National Climate Change Action Plan.
