INEOS Styrolution has confirmed that its previously announced investment in a pilot plant for advanced polystyrene recycling will go through

The plant will be based on depolymerisation technology and will be built in partnership with Recycling Technologies in Swindon, UK
.
It is expected to be operational in the second half of 2022

Depolymerization is an advanced recycling technology that converts PS waste feedstock into its main component, styrene, which can then be used to make new PS with the same properties as the original material

PS is one of the few polymers that can be converted back to specific monomers, avoiding down-cycles
.

The carbon footprint of PS produced using depolymerization technology is also much smaller than that produced from naphtha

The Swindon pilot plant will be based on Recycling Technologies' fluidized bed reactor technology, which offers good scalability for building larger plants in the future
