LANXESS, which shut down its chromium chemicals plant
in Argentina, said on June 21 that it would further strengthen the competitiveness
of its leather chemicals business.
A central step is the transfer of the international chromium value chain to South Africa, where chromium ore is processed into sodium dichromate intermediates and eventually converted into special chromium compounds, mainly chromium tanning salts
used by the leather tanning industry around the world.

It will shut down its Zarate plant
in Argentina in the fourth quarter of 2017.
LANXESS currently operates dichromate and chrome tanning salt plants
in Zarate, Argentina and Newcastle and Merobank in South Africa.

By simplifying the chromium product value chain, it is expected to generate an additional EBITDA of EUR 10 million per year, with the effect to be generated
by the end of 2018.
