GE and Shanghai Maritime University pave the way for China's shipping industry to upgrade

Recently, General Electric Company (GE) and Shanghai Maritime University signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly build China's first marine electric propulsion and automatic control laboratory, and based on this laboratory, they will cooperate in research and innovation projects to develop new electric propulsion systems and accelerate the upgrading of China's shipping industry
    .

According to the memorandum, GE Power Conversion will provide internship and training opportunities for students of Shanghai Maritime University, as well as employment opportunities
    for outstanding interns.
The collaborative project and dedicated laboratory will serve as a training base for students, teachers and crew, as well as targeted training for customers and certification
    of professional technicians.
The program also included visits to Power Conversion's factories around the world, listening to presentations and attending training
    .
The MOU spin-off effects will also extend to other industries, including oil and gas, metallurgy, and port management and automation
    .
In addition, GE's renowned management training program and 6 Sigma practice and training will also be used for talent training
    .

The training program will focus on GE's core technology and solutions
consisting of electric propulsion systems, ship-wide automation systems and dynamic positioning systems.
Based on large-scale high-torque density induction motor technology, GE Power Conversion designs and manufactures high-power electric and propulsion system solutions designed for marine propulsion systems for merchant ships, large cruise ships, LNG carriers, research vessels and drilling platforms, known for
    their efficiency and reliability.

Joe Mastrangelo, CEO of GE Power Conversion, said: "Supporting local education and R&D and improving innovation capabilities in the countries and regions in which we operate is part of
    GE's open innovation philosophy.
At present, China's shipbuilding industry occupies a large share of the global market, and the industry environment is constantly changing
the demand for ship design and propulsion systems.
The partnership will help China develop and deliver competitive vessels in line with international sustainability strategies and further strengthen the company's leading position
in the marine electrical propulsion technology market.
