Researchers from Xinjiang Institute of Physics and Chemical Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences have recently developed silicone polymer materials
that can efficiently separate oil and water mixtures.
This material is shaped like a sponge, but it only absorbs oil and does not absorb water
.
In the future, the material is expected to play a role
in marine oil leakage and oilfield oil production sewage treatment.
According to Ma Pengcheng, a researcher at the institute, this silicone polymer material uses relatively cheap commercial non-fluorinated organosilanes as the main raw material to prepare ternary siloxane "sponges"
by controlling the hydrolysis and gelation process of silanes.
Compared with ordinary sponges, its surface contains a large number of non-polar groups and high roughness, giving the material a hydrophobic and lipophilic effect
.
This material has strong adsorption capacity, which can adsorb organic solvents and many oil compounds with 6~14 times its own mass, including crude oil, gasoline, diesel, sunflower oil, etc.
, and does not drip water
.
In addition, it also has strong toughness, and the permanent deformation rate of the material is less than 25%
after 15 repeated oil absorption and oil removal experiments.
The new "sponge" also has the potential to
separate miscible oil mixtures.
Ma Pengcheng said that the diffusion process and adsorption speed of different oils in the "sponge" are different, and the separation
of oil compounds can be carried out according to the position of the "sponge" on the adsorbed grease.
The product can also enter ordinary homes
.
Ma Pengcheng and his team members went to restaurants to do experiments, placing "sponges" in a mixture of waste grease and water in restaurants, the oil layer in the water is fully adsorbed, and by extrusion, the adsorbed oil can be extruded, and the "sponge" can be reused
.
At present, researchers are developing the oil stains separated from the "gutter oil", and plan to recycle them and develop them into environmentally friendly plasticizers used in the processing of plastic products, so as to realize the "gutter oil" from waste to treasure
.
