Clariant has partnered with Lavergne, a producer of sustainable engineering resins for recycled plastics, to develop halogen-free flame retardant polyester compounds made from marine plastics

Lavergne worked closely with Clariant to develop its recycled polyester grades of halogen-free flame retardants, stemming from the company's broader mission to create new uses for plastics, in this case recycled polyester from marine waste streams.

Lavergne VYPET™ OBP-FR, a new flame retardant compound with 30% glass fiber reinforcement and a UL 94 V-0 flame rating at 0.

Clariant's flagship halogen-free Exolit OP flame retardants were chosen for their recognized excellent environmental and health properties, as evidenced by the Clariant EcoTain® label and GreenScreen Benchmark 3 evaluation of key phosphinate ingredients

Lavergne and Clariant's experts required extensive liaison and development work to develop the correct formulation of flame retardants and synergists for that particular resin grade, and to optimize the processing conditions for the compound

The joint project took more than a year to materialize, and both parties are eager to continue the working relationship

"By using Clariant's Exolit OP flagship halogen-free phosphinate flame retardant in Lavergne's recycled OBP blends, the two companies have succeeded in realizing the potential commercial impact of sustainability! This development strengthens Clariant's commitment to developing Continued commitment to sustainable additives that, through value chain collaboration, can help bring plastics into circular, resource-efficient economies,

“By using VYPET™ OBP compounds, we are helping manufacturers significantly reduce the carbon footprint of plastics

The project to develop flame retardant recyclable grades is linked to the support of major electronics brand owners (OEMs) and their need for post-consumer recyclables
