Notebooks are a typical end application for Lavergne's VYPET™ OBP compounds containing Clariant's Exolit® OP flame retardant
.
Clariant has partnered with Lavergne, a producer of sustainable engineering resins for recycled plastics, to develop halogen-free flame retardant polyester compounds made from marine plastics
.
Lavergne worked closely with Clariant to develop halogen-free flame retardant grades of recycled polyester, stemming from the company's broader mission to develop new uses for plastics, in this case the recovery of polyparaphenylene from marine debris Ethylene glycol dicarboxylate (PET)
.
The first new flame retardant compound is on the market
The first new flame retardant compound is on the marketLavergne VYPET™ OBP-FR, the first new flame retardant compound with 30% glass fiber reinforcement, UL 94 V-0 flame rating, and 0.
8 mm thickness, is suitable for numerous electrical and electronic (E&E) plastic applications such as aesthetic structural parts
.
Clariant's flagship product Exolit OP halogen-free flame retardant was selected for its proven environmental and health properties, the product has the Clariant EcoTain® label, and its key phosphinate ingredient has been validated by the GreenScreen Benchmark 3 assessment
.
In addition to its innovative circularity, Exolit OP grades have been proven suitable for various recycling processes without losing their flame retardant properties
.
Lavergne and Clariant's experts required intensive liaison and development work to develop a suitable formulation of flame retardants and synergists for this particular resin grade and to optimize the processing conditions for the compound
.
It took more than a year for the collaborative project to finally come to fruition, and both parties are eager to continue the partnership
.
Yoan Lavergne, Marketing Manager at Lavergne, said: “By using VYPET™ OBP compounds, we are helping manufacturers significantly reduce their plastics carbon footprint, and this is just the beginning

Plan to exhibit related Exolit OP series halogen-free flame retardants at CHINAPLAS 2020
Plan to exhibit related Exolit OP series halogen-free flame retardants at CHINAPLAS 2020This project to develop flame retardant recycled grades is closely linked to the support of major electronics brands (OEMs, Original Equipment Manufacturers) and their need for post-consumer recycling
.
Recycling is part of OEMs' sustainability proposition and is certified by eco-labelling schemes such as EPEAT (Electronics Environmental Impact Assessment Tool) in the US and Blue Angel in Germany
.
OEMs also support the sourcing of ocean plastic by sponsoring waste clean-up and collection
.
Initially targeted for less demanding components such as packaging trays, the end-use of the recyclate is now expanding into other structural components of electronic equipment
.
Clariant also plans to exhibit the related Exolit OP series of halogen-free flame retardants at CHINAPLAS 2020
